I don't think anyone can properly judge unless they've been through the 90s AND the 00s. A lot people vote for Britney solely because they grew up around the 1999-2000 era listening to Britney all through the 21st century but when mariah was out, they were toddlers.
To that effect, a lot of people have absolutely no idea just HOW big Mariah Carey was from 1993-1996. Yes, I experienced both Mariah and Britney's peaks and Mariah's was 10x as colossal as Britney was.
Mariah was literally EVERYWHERE from 1993-1996, and this was only her peak. She was huge throughout the entire decade. You couldn't escape her voice anywhere, I'm totally serious. When Britney came out, she was the new biggest thing, but she was never as "everywhere" as Mariah. Maybe one or two singles (Baby one more time, Crazy...) and the odd hit (toxic) but she was NEVER as a HUGE DEAL as Mariah was in the 90s. Too many people here have absolutely no idea to make that judgement. People just aren't familiar with Mariah in the 90s and that's totally fair enough. You weren't from that era. But consequently you can't make a fair judgement. If I asked most of you who voted for Britney, you could probably name 20 Britney songs, but if I asked you to name Mariah songs, they'd simply be "We Belong Together", "Shake It Off", "Touch My Body", "Obsessed", "That Bieber Duet", basically post 2005 songs. Or maybe the odd 90s song like "Hero", "Without You", "Always Be My Baby". But that would be it. And that's evidence enough.
And let's not forget, Mariah Carey had two peaks. The fact that she could -come back- in 2005 is testament to that. If she wasn't tha tbig worldwide, no one would've given a damn to some singer who could belt high notes.'
I'm not meaning to criticise anybody but it's just not a fair poll seeing as these two women belong to two completely different eras and there are probably VERY few people that could comprehend the enormity of Mariah's stardom in the 90s. I mean, there was a period of time that I really DISLIKED her in the 90s, but I still couldn't deny, she was everywhere. Imagine Rihanna now, but for a consistent 11 years.
Clearly Mariah.

Britney is no longer popular here in Asia. Nobody mentions her name anymore. I don't even hear her songs being played on radio. She has been completely replaced and overshadowed by Rihanna, Katy Perry, Lady Gaga and Beyonce. Even Beyonce is now more popular than her and Beyonce is not even that huge of a superstar here. While Mariah remains to be famous here. Her old songs are perennially played on radio. And she is idolized even by a lot of local singers here.

I agree with you that it's unfair to compare the two as many of us were toddlers during Mariah's prime, although you are wrong in some parts. Britney, at her prime, was EVERYWHERE. Especially in her "Britney" era and the beginning of her "ITZ" era. When you went outside, she would be all over the places in billboards, commercials, music channels, talk shows, etc, etc.

Honey, I lived through the 90's and witnessed Mariah's dominance as well. She owned the airwaves with an iron fist in the US. For you to say she was 10x bigger than Britney is laughable at best. Mariah was HUGE in the U.S., more so there than anywhere else, but she wasn't as big as Britney in Europe or all of South/Central America. People keep mentioning how big Mariah was in Asia, America, and Brazil, but what about the rest of the world? She did really well in Europe, but not nearly as well as Britney.
As far as how big each were, they were huge, but I think Britney was bigger because of the way technology developed, especially at the turn of the century with the internet, where Britney consistently topped the most search list on several browsers for an entire decade. She was the most photographed person in the world for the longest and still is one of the most photographed till this day. People invested heavy interest in not just Britney the entertainer, but Britney the person as well. Her personality gravitated heavy attention and affection. The magnitude of star power of Britney had in N.A. (including all of Central America especially), S.A. (not just Brazil, but also in Argentina, Venezuela, Chile, Peru, Colombia, etc), all of Europe was locked up for her especially during the first two ears. Asia (Philippines, Japan, South Korea, Indonesia, China, UAE, Taiwan, etc.)
Let's not forget DOWN UNDER with in Australia and New Zealand. She had major success there as well. You can get a clear indicator of the sheer magnitude each artists have by the demand for an entertainer when touring multiple continents on end and Britney has done that since her first album. She has toured every continent, but Antartica and Africa, selling out both stadiums and arenas in those five continents consistently from beginning to present. Mariah hasn't embarked on a heavy world tour in big stadiums and arenas like her contemporaries Janet, Whitney, Madonna and Celine had. Britney was made into a DOLL. She sold not just albums and singles, but magazines, dolls, tour tickets, tour merchandise, video games, footwear, fragrances, etc. The empire that is Britney Jean Spears has sold tons.
As far Mariah hits go, I could probably list all of her #1 hits in the U.S. if you want that. No one needs to educate me on Mimi, for I have all her albums with the exception of Glitter and that's for a reason we all know I remember the talk shows, I remember the diva demands she had, I remember her performances at award shows and talk shows, I remember her musical woes through the entire career. I am not a stan, but I know! God knows I loved her in the 90's along with my favorite boy band, BOYZ II MEN. Some of my favorites songs by her are Visions of Love (the song that started the big machine), My All, One Sweet Day, Butterfly, Hero, Can't Take That Away From Me (that video speaks to me), Breakdown (w/ Bone Thugz -n-Harmony...that was my jam), Honey (I wasn't a fan of the Diddy mix, but the video was fab), Always Be My Baby, and Dream Lover are my favorites. She did a song with 98 Degrees and Joe, but I can't remember the name of it, I think it's "Thank God I Found You" or something like that.

Co sign. Then add the fact that she can sell out stadiums around the world and has one of the highest grossing female tours of all time with only 97 shows (Circus Tour) ... and the clear answer is Britney Spears.

Actually it isn't laughable at all, because it's quite true. I could not escape Mariah's name from 1993-1996 especially with the Daydream era.
Actually no. I was actually living in Europe through the late 90s to early 2000s. YES, i'm not denying that she wasn't huge, she was CERTAINLY huger than other artists, but she was NOT as big as Mariah was. Mariah was in flames in Spain, France, Italy and Germany, and branded throughout other countries. YES, Britney was big, but NOT as big as Mariah then.
And that's funny you say that, because Britney was never THAT popular in South America at all. In the late 90s to early 2000s, it was all Shakira actually. (And it still is). Britney was popular of course. But neither Mairah nor Britney were THAT big in South America.

I agree with the second half of this paragraph, but not the first few sentences. Even without the development of the internet, Mariah was ridiculous. It was acutally so overblown that I remember my parents going crazy about her name being actuallty everywhere.

We can't really compare them two. Mariah initiated as a local artist for her first 2 albums, and then explored worldwide, really. And we ARE discussing her peaks after all, so during Mariah's peaks she did tour worldwide tour (albeit a few dates). Touring alone cannot determine the winner.

Firstly, glitter the album is actually better than Charmbracelet or Rainbow. Anyway, not the point.
In the end I still say Mariah but It is definitely subjective.

that's a very difficult question I can't actually decide
“I’m becoming a little more comfortable in front of the camera. I wasn’t used to it before. I was thrown into a new lifestyle and everything I do is kind of filmed or photographed. I’m a private guy. I like to keep to myself. I’m shy, maybe. It gets kind of tricky for me but, I’m beginning to find the fun in it. I don’t take myself too seriously so if I’m front of the camera, that’s what you’re going to get, me clowning around."(Bruno Mars)
