You would have to track Mariah and Britney from the same time period and compare Mariah's career 1990-2002 to Britney's career 1999-2011. The same could be said for any other artists who debuted earlier than both of them, like Michael Jackson & Madonna. Stop looking for excuses.

The GP/Media were obsessed with Britney during her meltdown (who isn't interested in the fall of a Popstar anyway?), but look what happened once she stopped the antics in 2008.
She's no longer a tabloid attraction & her career's on a steady decline.

She's a glorified tabloid figure who sold shitloads during her short-lived prime, and has been fading ever since.

BOMT sold more then Daydream and about the same as Music Box. Oops!...I Did It Again sold about the same as Daydream. Their peaks regarding numbers were close to one another. Britney was the bigger star out of the two of them though, I don't see how that could be denied.
