This "movement" is no longer STOP JOSEPH KONY. It's KONY 2012!!!!!!!!!! There are people on Facebook who have changed their profile pictures and don't even know who Joseph Kony is. You are all feeding into this. I applaud their efforts to raise awareness so people can follow the issue, but still, if you wanna donate DON'T donate to IC.
|
And now most everyone knows who Joseph Kony is and what he does thanks to "Kony 2012". That's the power of this organization and whether you like it or not they've been able to, over the course of years, find a way that they believe is effective in dealing with this issue. Let them be great.
The fact that they've raised this much awareness so far only leads me to believe that supporting them can only do more good.

Well, which charity was able to take something nobody in the general public knew about and skyrocket it into the public eye?
And don't be so sure about the whole "killing Kony won't stop this" thing. Kony is much more than just a face of this group; the LRA believe spirits communicate the mission directly through him.

All I'm saying is that there are OTHER charities that are much less dubious and could do a much better job at directly helping people.
|
Agreed, but IC has been instrumental in getting this message out there. I don't want the public or the internet to stop caring about this, and IC seems to be the best way to prevent that. There's benefit in both direct help and raising public awareness.

Cool. I know who Joseph Kony is. Is that going to stop him?
No.
So, okay, sure. Assume I take this a step farther. Now that I know who Kony is, assume I donate money to IC.
Your money is now going to a military accused of rape and looting. If this military were to intervene it would lead to the killings of innocent children. And then, okay, assume the military finally kills Kony after all this bloodshed.
Do the child soldiers and sex slaves get to return home?
No.
Donate to charities that will HELP the victims return home. Killing Kony isn't going to do ANYTHING.

exaggerating the scale of LRA abductions and murders and emphasizing the LRA’s use of innocent children as soldiers, and portraying Kony — a brutal man, to be sure — as uniquely awful, a Kurtz-like embodiment of evil.” He’s certainly evil, but exaggeration and manipulation to capture the public eye is unproductive, unprofessional and dishonest.
|
Okay but if he's still doing all of this (even on a smaller scale) what's the problem with bringing him down?

Absolutely nothing. It would be, without a doubt, a hugeblow to the lessors below him. But a military intervention is NOT the way to go about it, especially given that he's already had peacetalks.
Bringing Kony down is important but it's NOT the first priority.

They use that money to make more documentaries which will end up inciting the same outrage. "Kony is bad@# MUST STOP KONY BY REBLOGGING!@"
They also use that money to fund military extremists with a very shady background.
This is basically the same as you guys donating money to bring Osama down or something.

I don't really ever like these whole "let's make charity popular!" campaigns because they themselves require a lot of time and money, reducing the amount that actually goes to the charity, and it actually makes the meaningfulness of the money given lower.

Now it's in the public conscious. Why would the US or any other 1st world country with no interest in the matter care if its people don't care? Awareness is the first, extremely important, step. Just the hope it gives the people who have to live under those circumstances makes IC's work valuable.
Killing Kony will get rid of one of the world's worst human beings and hopefully discourage the efforts of his movement.
And why wouldn't the child soldiers and sex slaves return home?

I'm tired of people thinking they're humanitarians because they tweet/Facebook 'stop Kony!' and share a link

Anyways, the point of raising awareness is to put pressure on the US government to employ help and seek out to capture this monster. The idea of the campaign is to create such an overwhelming demand, that the US government feels obligated to help. It is quite a long shot, but a lot of people feel that ignoring this cause goes against American values since it's a human rights issue.
It's easy to sit behind a computer screen and judge how a charity spends its money. At the end of the day a charity is still a business and requires revenue to stay alive. Staff wages, transportation, and advertising are all vital components and need to be sustained. People who chose to work for charities already receive a much lower salary anyway.
They're trying to get involved with the cause and are doing it in a way that's successfully impacting media right now. If you look at the faults and turn away, what's that going to accomplish for the children of Uganda?

They've also used money to help build schools, create jobs, and bring the children who were effected to America so they can talk about it.

When we killed Bin Laden did Al Qaeda suddenly disband..? Do you really think killing Kony will do much at all? Is that going to magically help the victims? I'm not going to explain this to you. .___.

You better visit the previous KONY 2012 thread. I made an essay-long post there, and I think most of the peeps thought I'm an absolute d-bag.
