She released one spanish album that was a success but that was it. most of her English music is urban and dance inspired.

Why not, they are both most sucessful latina in music right now

Anyway without Jlo crossing over into films to music and breaking down the doors for Latinos in POPULAR music,duringthe Latin Explosion alongside with Ricky Martin and Santana Shakira would not have crossed over

The difference is that JLo was born and raised and started her career in the US, Shakira, Santana and Ricky Martin weren't and Shakira actually made music in spanish first and then she made english music. Her success had nothing to do with JLo.

Many of my friends back in 2001 didn't even know Shakira was latin with WW. It was pure pop and she was blonde. She looked more like Britney than J.LO.

Shakira started her crossover as already being a latin icon, J.LO didn't, she started as a dancer for successful artists and then an actress playing someone who was successful and then not even crossing over, but becoming famous in her home country, the US. So she didn't pave the way.

Also, you can't pave the way for someone else in 2 damn years! Amy Winehouse paved the way for Adele to be successful 5 years later. That's paving the way for you. So delusional.

She paved the way for Shakira in th US. and lets be honest, nobody knew who shakira was in the 90s out side of the latin countries.
While JLo was a professional dancer, Shakira was puttin' out albums and singles.

and NO, Shakira looked nothing but latin even with blonde hair. her accent and everything. Whenever Whenever sounds pure Latin pop .

Hips Dont Lie was massive because it was a world cup song. i honestly think It would have been huge no matter who sang it. besides the song is catchy as hell

And my point is that even though YOU think it sounds latin pop, it might not be to others and the new Shakira fans in 2001.

J.LO has nothing to do with Shakira's success and J.LO was never highly successful herself, her movies get a C-rating if lucky and her albums sell a million copies now and 6-7 million back then. Shakira sold 15 million of her crossover album for a reason = She introduced the world to latin culture with her dancing and singing. The only latin thing in J.LO is her ancestry just like Kim Kardashian.
