Mary is the Queen of Hip-hop/Soul and she's always announced and introduced as that.
Her new album is NOT bad. It's actually better than her last album. Growing pains was a great album too. I don't think her body of work is underrated, u can always turn on a Mary J song and get every1 goin "Love no Limit" "U Remind Me" "Real Love" "Rainy Dayz" "Family Affair" "I Can Love You" "My Life" ETC so many TIMELESS and classic songs by her.
I don't think she's trying to stay relevant. Her album is a great R&B ALBUM. She's one of the few R&B artists who have stayed true to their sound for their whole career (2 decade career)
