A couple of days ago I made a blog about this topic and have been requested to make it a thread. Let's talk that talk:

2012: Being 'basic' is the new black.

And here's a little cheat sheet as to why:

-Nicki Minaj: Receiving backlash for her Roman performance on the Grammy's, Taking her image over the top, Taking the dancepop route over the urban route her hardcore fans loved her for.
-Katy Perry: Milking Teenage Dream for all of its worth instead of thinking of a new original idea, Milking the Russel Brand divorce with POM.
-Chris & Rihanna: You know why. I use though! (Plus bad timing. Nobody wants this after something as tragic as Whitney's passing.)
-Lady Gaga: She lost a lot of fans during the BTW era for pushing the theatrical piece too far.
-Madonna: People are annoyed by the fact that she's clinging to younger artists for a quick hit. We can't judge until MDNA comes out, but it seems people don't feel that her image matches her age.

I think to be successful this year, you have to adapt to what the public needs. They're done with pushing the envelope. They want the basic artists...or at least calmer. (Why do you think Adele has been having so much success?)

Ciara, Ke$ha, Mariah, Shakira, Cassie, and a dozen new artists all have the opportunity to take this to their own advantage. (I'd include Bey and Brit but sadly we have to wait another year.) They'll be calmer with their releases, and I think that will attract listeners.

Now this is where I worry about the new artists.
-Azealia Banks: I want her to be successful, but she's like the female Kanye on Twitter. Will the public be here for that Rihanna-type attitude?
-Lana Del Rey: The hipster crowd was here for her. Now that she's too popular for them, any indie fan can get into her. But is her personality too.. off.. for the public? Plus, that SNL thing is still against her.
-Dev: She's different in a good way, but she's not consistent.

The new girls that could make it, just on the fact that they're CALM:
-The British imports (Cher Lloyd, Alexandra Burke): British artists have been breaking America lately, and they may be no exception.
-Alexis Jordan and Wynter Gordon: Simple, mindless dancepop. This is what the public will use. Have you listened to the radio lately? They'll fit in.

My call: Basic is the new black. If not today, it's going to get to that point. The public is done with the nonsense. It was cute in 2008 when Just Dance blew up, but things went from artistic to obnoxious fast.

Being "basic" is pretty much not good in this industry. Being basic is boring. There needs to be people like Gaga who keep pushing the envelope. And your examples aren't really good. Nicki only did a performance, some loved it, some hated it. But still, her single Starships still went top 10.

The public maybe "full" of Gaga's and others actions, but if everyone acts "basic", they will look for another extravert singer.

That'll probably happen eventually, but these things cycle. Right now we're getting to a point where it's going to go the other way because 'unique' is getting overdone. The public is going to want more guy/girl-next-door singers.

You can also look it at an other way. Adele is hugely succesful right now, maybe because she's so different from all the other popstars right now. That's what makes Adele unique. I don't see other acts like Adele having that kind of succes now and I don't see it happening in the future either.

We just have to wait what will happen. I think it would be great if the charts would be more diverse and with more "real" music and not too much of that dance crap. I just don't think being basic would help them to enter the charts.

Generic songs have always muddled throughout the industry. In the 80s we had artists like Paula but they're basically all forgotten.

Why do the labels try with 'basics'? Yes they can sell singles but the album sales are appaulling. Are single sales THAT profitable? no
