Because most of the people buying her album are doing so cause its the cool thing to do. Not because they actually LOVE her.
That's why I highly doubt she's gonna open with monster like numbers with her next album (unless she gets a huge smash)....she hasn't built a strong fanbase. Her album only has 5 good songs on it, she doesn't do videos, she only does 1 performance every 5 months, she doesn't promote much, and in general she's just boring.
To sum it up, she's a fad.

Who needs stans on ATRL when you are pushing 7M in album sales with little promo at all?

Exactly. "Stans" who do nothing but sit all day behind a computer arguing on behalf of their fave on every music forum but don't do their part where it really counts aren't the kind of people artists seek to have as fans. Besides, look at all the fanbases that are rife with stans, they've acquired a reputation for being psychotic, and as a result, make the artist look bad. Adele certainly doesn't need that.

I don't ****ing understand why her album is selling so well. It just, doesn't make sense when you think about the industry up until now. It would make sense if her album only started selling as well as it has been for the past year after the Grammy's which is when the GP really seemed to start regarding her as a force, but she's been selling like that for a while when it seemed that the public had no more interest in her than they did for Rihanna in 2005. She really had no media/cultural presence up until quite recently and even now it's no where near that of, say Gaga's in 2009. Who knows really, at least quality music is getting these kinds of sales.
Maybe she appeals to an older audience who are more likely to actually purchase albums.

She's not the kind of artist that does the craziest and most controversial things, which creates many stans. But you would love to be a fan of somebody that doesn't record the typical, popular music today, like Adele.

If you're basing this on what's presented on ATRL, then you have to also think about the demographic on this board.
Most of these folks who stan for Lady GaGa, Katy Perry, Rihanna and other pop stars are young, gay males, and a lot of them love flashy, over-the-top, in-your-face stuff, and Adele doesn't present that. So, that's why she's called "boring," a "fad," etc., and doesn't have many "stans." Most of these posters aren't interested in an artist like her. How many stans do Bruno Mars have on this board? Not that many. Does Alicia Keys have many stans? No, but she has done just fine commercially. Plus, she appeals more to an adult crowd.
And these folks need to realize that there is a world outside of the things they talk about on here. People like Adele, Mumford & Sons, Alicia Keys, Bruno Mars and Lady Antebellum may not have many "stans" who would sign up on forums and engage in online arguments, but they still have supporters out there, and that's really what it boils down to. I don't know why people think "stans" are the only ones who make these artists who they are.

Oh really?
It couldnt possibly be that they love the strong singles and want to hear more? And by most people you mean like 9 million plus bought it just to look cool?

There is no way to determine how many people are buying her album "because it's the cool thing to do." That's just an excuse made by people who are either confused about the success of the album or don't like the album. Surely, there are people buying her album because they heard someone mentioned how good it is. That's called "word of mouth." It's merely an opinion that the album only has 5 good songs. There are many good reviews of the album. It should be mentioned that her songs are being played everywhere, from radio to TV shows to movies. That means potential buyers. People are discovering her each and everyday. This is a normal thing, and I doubt there's that many people who would spend money on something they truly aren't interested in, in this climate just to prove how "cool" they are. And if they really wanted to be cool, they could be spending their monies on someone like Bon Iver, who has way more "cool" credibility than Adele will ever have.

Yes, 20M people bought an album because it was "cool".
I guess there was no "cool" thing to do since 8 years ago.

I wonder how much her album would have sold if it wasn't in the pirating era. Just think about it. WOW

you know there's more than just ATRL like facebook, twitter and yea the real life , I actually feel that the artists who have not many stans here are the ones who are killing it with sales in real life
“I’m becoming a little more comfortable in front of the camera. I wasn’t used to it before. I was thrown into a new lifestyle and everything I do is kind of filmed or photographed. I’m a private guy. I like to keep to myself. I’m shy, maybe. It gets kind of tricky for me but, I’m beginning to find the fun in it. I don’t take myself too seriously so if I’m front of the camera, that’s what you’re going to get, me clowning around."(Bruno Mars)

you're absolutely right and adele and bruno are catching up to the others on facebook and twitter which I think has a big part in determining a singer's popularity and they've been around for two years

Most of her fans/stans here jumped on the bandwagon when she became huge ( ). Most of them didn't even knew her around the 19 era, or even if they knew her back then, they would call her a big fat cow. Not all of them are like that though.

Adele's only been hugely popular for about a year anyway. Most people don't just start to suddenly obsess over someone based on one album; it takes time to develop a large group of stans. Not that Adele will ever need them to sell records.

Ummm Adele does not anly appeals for adults ove 40. She has the POP, Adult Pop and Adult Contemporary audiences in her hands and she's slaying digitally on the young-driven iTunes. A lot of young people on my Facebook post things related to her (videos, songs, etc.).
"Rolling In The Deep" is gonna be the biggest selling digital song by a female artist soon.
I think "word of mouth" is helping her too. My brother bought 15 "21" copies for gifts on Christmas.
