SPRINGFIELD TWP. — After touring with American Idol’s Kelly Clarkson last year as her DJ, it’s clear Springfield Township native Ric Robbins has come a long way from making mix tapes for his Mount Healthy High School friends and working as a DJ at high school parties.
Q: You toured with American Idol winner Kelly Clarkson from 2009-2011. How did that come about? What was your role and what did you take away from the experience?
A: Kelly’s music director, Jason Halbert, and I had toured together with another band, so when Kelly told him she wanted a DJ in her band, he called me to come work with them a little bit in 2007 on a few things. That started a good relationship with her camp. In early 2009, she called me back out to join the band fulltime for the promotion of her “All I Ever Wanted” album. I absolutely love working with them, and it was definitely the best touring experience of my life, not to mention I got to see pretty much the entire world.
My role in the band was primarily as a DJ, but I did some percussion too. I was able to do some music production as well to add some cool things to my parts in the show. Throughout the touring time, I was fortunate to be able to do some remixes to some of her songs with my production partners, as well as to write three songs with her.
Q: What was your most memorable part of the tour?
A: There were so many memorable things. If I had to pick one, it would be when we were in South Africa, we spent two days with the kids in an orphanage. One of Kelly’s backing singer’s dad helps start orphanages in Africa, so we went to one of those. It was so amazing to spend time with these kids who had so little and had been through so much, yet they were still so happy. We played with them, did crafts, did music with them, helped clean and repair things at the orphanage, and just basically tried to love on them. It was humbling to see Kelly’s generosity as she bought so many toys, clothes, books, musical instruments, computers, and things to give to the kids. You don’t often see a celebrity who is that generous, let alone will go herself with us to spend the time with the kids. It was a life-changing time. And, we got to go great white shark diving too; that was crazy!
Q: Is there a story that might describe best how supportive your wife was for you during that time?
A: I definitely have the best wife on the planet. How she handled her mom’s battle with cancer and eventual passing while I was on tour in Europe best describes her support. She showed such strength and commitment to our family while I was across the world doing my job. When her mom passed, she told me that I didn’t need to leave the tour to come home to the funeral, that I needed to stay on the mission that God had me on. Of course, Kelly wouldn’t hear of that. She put me on the next plane home to be with my family, and I missed a few shows of the tour because of it. But, that is also a testament to how important family is to Kelly and how much she cared about my wife, my kids and me. I couldn’t do what I do without my wife – period.

Playing WDKY right now on my radio show A friend of mine who was listening to the show told me: "WOW, you just can't get enough of Kelly can't ya?" (Cause I played "Dark Side" at the beginning of the show) and I told her: "Sorry, it's just that her music is heaven" hahha

Here's a closer video of DYWS. You can hear a little better but kinda crappy audio and see Kelly closer. She laughs when Jason notices that she used the wrong entrance, lol. The audience showed her some love.
I don't know why it's not embedding here's the link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature...&v=ioU30XhKHFU
