Adele lamented lost love, belting, "We could have had it all" -- and she did, with "Rolling in the Deep," her first No. 1 hit in the US, conquering the Hot 100 for seven weeks, charting for 65, and becoming the all-time highest-selling digital song by a woman in the US, with 7 million copies sold.
The only song to steal its fire -- and surpass it as the fastest song in digital history to reach 6 million in sales (taking just 48 weeks) -- was LMFAO's "Party Rock Anthem," featuring Lauren Bennett and GoonRock. The high-energy dance track became the fourth-best-selling digital song of all time.
Maroon 5 also took bold steps this year, teaming up with Christina Aguilera on "Moves Like Jagger." Though they may spar on "The Voice," lead singer Adam Levine and Aguilera were pitch-perfect here, melding his soulful vocals with her throaty pipes in a funky soul track that captured Mick Jagger's strut and swagger. "Moves Like Jagger" topped the Billboard Hot 100, in the week ending September 10, 2011, as the greatest airplay gainer for the third consecutive week selling 5 Million Copies since its release.
Taking chances also worked for Katy Perry. Her song "E.T.," featuring Kanye West, reigned as the year's third-biggest-selling digital song in the US, with more than 4 million units. This fourth official single from Perry's second major label studio album, "Teenage Dream" (2010), is slower in tempo and darker than her usual fare, with lyrics about being "infected" by alien love, while West raps over a "stomp-stomp-clap" beat. But it succeeded in abducting fans by the millions, propelling it to the top of the Hot 100 for five weeks.
Threatening to unseat it is "Give Me Everything," by Pitbull featuring Ne-Yo, DJ Afrojack, and Nayer. Melding Latin-infused rhythms with Broadway-style dance, the song is Pitbull's biggest hit yet. Its rise on the charts wasn't hindered by its controversial line, "I got it locked up like Lindsay Lohan," which prompted Lohan to sue for defamation (Pitbull has asked the court for a dismissal). The song reached No. 1 on the Hot 100 in July and has sold 4 million copies since its release.

I didn't realize any stations even played that anymore. I hear Fighter from time to time but she needs some new jams. I was thinking about how sad it is that she hasn't had a really huge solo smash in so long.
