Yes, I believe you take influences from people, and create your OWN ideas -- and that makes you original. Take Britney Spears, for example. Britney Spears is truly one of the most original pop artists on the scene, in terms of both music AND style. She constantly states that Michael Jackson, Janet Jackson, and Madonna influence her, however, you don't see Britney Spears making an "Alejandro" video or creating a "Born This Way" single just because Madonna inspires her. Spears draws from the people who influence her and infuses that into an entirely fresh, forward-thinking idea. Britney Spears is not here for reliving the past, she's here for giving us something new and inventive... and she succeeds in doing that with every single album. Nothing sounds like "Femme Fatale," "Circus," "Blackout," etc. She keeps progressing forward and within the process, she gives brief shouts out to her "faves," like in the Toxic video, for example. That's how you incorporate influences with a wink and a nudge as opposed to making something that blatantly resembles another artist.

But there is always a first. Things don't come from no-where.
There was a first to play a piano, there was a first to create a 12 bar blues, there was a first to write a song. There is always a first it just is rare that that first person is remembered for it because there are so many other people to do it.

I want to know what people define as original/fresh and what is copying because the line seems to change to suit whatever people want to argue about.

Why? I didn't insult anyone and if anyone starts getting too specific then it is their WPs they are playing with.

I completely agree with that.
I think art has become finding the right balance of things that have worked in the past, worked for other people and make them work for you in your own unique way.
It annoys me that so many people accuse other artists of copying when that artist has more than likely 'copied' that thing from someone else in the first place. Pop music will always have common factors by definition. It is the music that is popular, the style that is everywhere and everyone at that time.

Well as it is a discussion thread, people are going to discuss stuff so if you don't want to read it then just don't bother saying anything. It is a music forum and some people are interested in such communication.
But it is obviously so much better when the reply is something like this.

I see. But I still say no one is or was original.

No, there is no real such thing as originality. An idea needs to come from somewhere, or has to be inspired by someone/something.
It's why they commonly say "Write what you know".
"I just want to know your name".

Not necessarily. Music has its own set of rules (verse-chorus-bridge setup, 4 beats to a measure, etc.) that void the possibility of being "original." In order to be a true musician you need to follow the conventions of music. In other words, you can have your own creative style, but there is no way to be original without ignoring the rules of music.

I'm gonna be a star, you know why?
Because I have nothing left to lose.

But somewhere way back in the past, someone created those rules. So there is always a first.

For me, originality is incorporating an idea to your own work. The best example I can present is Madonna's video for Express Yourself. She got that image from a movie, used that image into her music video and I think that is an example of originality. Not too many MV before utilizes films into their MV treatments. Now, when Xtina used the same images for NMT, that one is just blatant plagiarism.

Regardless of how original an artist may be, they certainly speak to a certain group of people like no other artist can which is really all that matters.
