Dance-pop is certainly slowly on it's way out now, that's for sure. It's telling that the biggest dance-pop song of the year is seen as a "guilty pleasure" to most people. And the airplay of Where Have You Been and Scream being so high, but them selling so little digitally, reminds me a lot of back around 2007 time when a lot of urban songs used to get really high airplay, and nobody would buy them, and eventually pop radio just gave up on the genre.

I think alternative/adult contemporary will be the next style that dominates tbh. I was looking at the pop radio chart today, and it's looking increasinly more and more like it's an adult contemporary chart...

And I also saw an article on Billboard that they're going to try and cross more alternative songs over to pop radio soon.

This also reminds me of the late 90's/early 00's with all that teen-pop that was around, and all the boy and girl groups, and everybody got fed up and wanted more mature music. I think the same is about to happen again in the next few years.

The airplay that WAY and STIUTK got were very circumstantial. Pop doesn't seem to be programming anything else. Grouplove is getting very lukewarm updates, and they are not touching "Little Talks," "Ho Hey" or "Burn It Down." Not to mention, what Top 40 is doing to "Some Nights" is a crime, considering they have broken through on the format.

Burn It Down by Linkin Park is getting way more pop airplay than any hip hop or R&B song at the moment. Even ones like Work Hard Play Hard, which are very pop-friendly, are getting less pop airplay than Burn It Down. And this is just the beginning aswell. I reckon in 12 months time it'll be more evident.

Urban radio are just as bad in some ways though. Let's be honest, if songs like Too Close or As Long As You Love Me were by black singers, they would be doing well on urban right now.

I'm gonna be honest with you, I've never heard Atlanta's pop station play Wiz Khalifa, even as a feature. With Payphone and 5 O'Clock, they only played the versions without him. They did the same thing with E.T. They played the original instead of the Kanye Remix.

Also, alternative songs crossover more often than you think. It's just that often enough, the genre produces a lot of one hit wonders that not even their home format will pay attention to after they crossover. Shinedown and Kings of Leon are recent examples.

Oddly, "Some Nights" topped Alternative Songs. I wasn't expecting it to, considering how they've treated FTP's singles since PUK crossed over.

Well, KoL, not so much in a technical sense. They managed to peak at 37 with Radioactive. Also, "Sex On Fire" went Platinum, despite peaking only at 56.

Shinedown are, but just barely. "If You Only Knew" peaked at 42. Just two spots away from disqualifying them of the OHW title.

Maybe Chart wise but I hear I Dare You on the Radio more than Second Chance. So I don't think Shinedown is a one hit wonder.

In my country, Use Somebody was very big, but Sex on Fire was a MASSIVE hit (it had similar chart success to Poker Face and I Gotta Feeling), so I wouldn't consider Kings of Leon one-hit wonders, although I definitely can see why someone in the US would.

An artist can be a one hit wonder in the US, but be huge in the UK. Oasis is technically one with "Wonderwall", if you consider that they only had one hit on the Hot 100. However, they had a handful of hits that were airplay only singles that were not allowed to chart back then.

I hear "If I Only Knew" on my local radio station a lot, but... it's not really representative.

A lot of One Hit Wonders have various caveats. A lot of front-people are considered one hit wonders if they have a hit apart from their main group. Amy Lee and Hayley Williams are considered, because of their songs with Seether and B.o.B. respectively.

I think Ryan Tedder was one because of his song with Far East Movement.

And then again, some people don't consider features to be hits for the featured artist. M.I.A. technically isn't a OHW because of GMAYL, but she sorta qualifies.
