Don't be. Madagascar is an established children film series. It is expected to make money. Prometheus is doing well for an R-rated sci-fi film!

I keep hearing that but I was hoping Prometheus would just slay the hell out of everyone, break a bunch of records, and be #1 at the box office

I saw Snow White the other day. Better then I expected. Charlize Theron made the movie. Kirsten is still the worst actress ever.
For those seeing Brave, there's a scene at the end of the credits.

I watched SW last Wednesday and it was pretty entertaining. I liked the spins they injected into the story, but sometimes it was very predictable (i.e. we all already knew the evil queen was to be killed with the technique the huntsman taught SW as soon as that scene finished).
Charlize and Chris did a good job on their own, but Charlize's was noticeably more remarkable (pretending Kristen Stewart is prettier than you when you're obviously the stunning one sure demands a lot of skill).
Kristen had me up until that hilarious speech she screamed preached to her people right after her resurrection, but from the battle to the crowning she kind of won me back again.
Worth watching if it's the only interesting-looking movie movie in the billboards.

I don't know where else to ask this :
How do they release movies like LotR or Tarantino's that were filmed when HD wasn't even out as blu-rays?

It has something to do with fact that professional 35mm tape has higher resolution than Full HD as you can see on big cinema screens. I can't tell you all specification but I've read that even old movies can be easily converted to HD from original tapes.
EDIT:
This may help you understand
