The only major differences were that sales were lower and the chart was faster moving (apart from a few songs like Candy Shop, Hollaback Girl, Gold Digger, etc. which stayed around forever).
The reason Mariah Carey always had such high airplay was because her songs crossed over to like 6 different formats massively (pop, rhythmic, urban, adult pop, adult urban and adult contemporary). That gave many of her songs massive airplay, it's pretty much impossible for digital sales to match up to those levels or airplay, and also, the listeners of some formats probably don't download very much. The listeners of adult contemporary, etc. probably prefer to buy albums, the listeners of urban probablyy illegally download mostly.
