how about giving an extra 5 or so points to a mention? that way lower ranking songs that are mentioned multiple times more over than the ones with fewer mentions but high tier points, they're given a bigger push to the top and have an equal chance at being seen in the same top 100 as the ones that accumulated more points than them?
idk, just suggesting
This is is exactly what madonnas suggestion means. Ranking songs from 11 to 30 points actually means that song gets addition 10 points just for mention, while #1 gives it additional 20 points. Therefore balance is maintained because both number of appearances in lists and position in list is important for final place in top 100 list
Favorite artists: Garbage, Muse, Adele, Queen, David Bowie, Nightwish, Enigma, Sarah Brightman, R.E.M., The Smashing Pumpkins, U2, Norah Jones, Tom Waits and many more Last.fm

oh. i guess that works, but really that suggestion just changes the value of the placements. so essentially my idea is basically the same thing...
how about make a personal rule that makes a certain set of lower numbers be allowed the extra points?

Ehhhh, I don't see how that would work, but you're more than willing to try and convince me otherwise.
Alright, even though I'm waiting on someone else to send me a revised top 20, I have put together an early top 100, not counting those rankings that have not been submitted yet. The good news is that all songs that had one ranking between 4-6 have been knocked out of the top 100 under this new method. There are currently 23 songs in the top 100 that got there because of a lone top 3 ranking, but this could change VERY quickly with a few more rankings. There are also a couple of early surprises, including some interesting songs in the bottom half of the top 10. And we're only just getting started.
Song of the Moment Volbeat - The Hangman's Body Count
I welcome the rain
And as you walk the final top
They will start to dark my past
Nothing counting in this world See the valley turn to darkness on your way
Well, I'm still hoping for other people to send in their lists (hence the one week ranking period/Saturday deadline), but, if it becomes readily apparent that no one else will send in their rankings, I could always start a few days earlier.

I've made absolutely no progress whatsoever on cutting my top 40 in half
I honestly don't know what I'm going to do
You could always do what I do and try to point out which songs absolutely must make your top 20, under any circumstances, and see if that helps you at all. I don't know if it will, but it's a start.
We are at almost 25 rankings, but I am always looking for more. There are a couple of you, in particular, whose rankings I'm sorely missing, so let's get to it! Maybe I could start this a day or two ahead of schedule with your help. *hint hint*

for what it's worth, my list is basically all 80s - 90s also. i only have Abba because i felt bad for not including the 70s i also have 'Fly Me To The Moon' for the very same reason. tehe.

try going by decade and see which songs from there you liked the most. it helped me finalize my list, even though there was infinitley more songs that i could've put

No, I can send my list in today, it's no problem. I'll just need to sit down at one point and sort out my rankings first.
