I just realized why every person new to Marina and the Diamonds thinks she sounds a lot like Katy Perry!!!
It has to do with schemas. When a very young child first sees a rabbit, he may call it a kitty because it is fluffy and fits his schema for a cat. However, there are differences, and one he is taught those differences he will readjust his schema for kitty and see the rabbit as a separate breed.
People who have never heard someone like Marina can't see her as herself, they have to associate her with one of the big popstars they are familiar with in order to understand her. The ones she is most similar to are Katy Perry and lana del Rey. That's why they do this.
It's the same for all those female artists who CONSTANTLY get compared to Gaga and Katy. It's just the only way the basic public knows how to react to unique pop acts.

I just think that it's ironic that she was constantly asked about/compared to Gaga during TFJ and now she's getting Katy comparisons in the EH era. Although I think it has more to do with the fact that Gaga was big during TFJ and now Katy's bigger. Plus Marina has that association with Katy with supporting her and no connection with Gaga as of now.
i've been playing this album since the hour it leaked and it STILL hasn't been over-played for me..

In what I've read, I've I see many more comparisons to Kate Bush, Siouxsie Sioux, and Lene Lovich, which makes a lot more since TFJ is a New Wave album, and Ms. Perry and Ms. Gaga haven't done anything like New Wave music that I'm aware of. Also, their voices are nothing like Marina's, so such comparisons fail all around.
I think that Marina's voice, and her music, are pretty damn unique. But even if her voice were a combination of Kate's, Siouxsie's, and Lene's, that would also be unique since no one else's voice is a combination of those elements.

After shading Marina for a while, I've finally decided to listen to this.
It was okay.
The songs that caught my attention were Living Dead, Power and Control, and Valley of the Dolls. I really love the production on all three of these, and Living Dead gives me slight La Roux teas which is great.
Other than that it was mostly average. Teen Idle and Hypocrates are terrible.
After shading Marina for a while, I've finally decided to listen to this.

This isn't a thread to criticize the album it's to enjoy it. You really didn't need to come here just to say that.
If Teen Idle is terrible, the starships video and that rotoscope retouching on Nicki's cellulite is atrocious.
I gave my honest opinion of the songs. Do you expect me to like every one?
I'm not mad you don't like some of the songs... but it seems like you came to this thread just to let us know you think the album is average and some of the songs, which are fan favorites, are "terrible."

I think it's really interesting that you don't like Teen Idle and like Valley of the Dolls actually! Sorta because I think they're kinda similar. And because generally people love Teen Idle and don't like Valley of the Dolls as much.
I can see the La Roux feel of Living Dead too! Makes me like the song more now, actually.
