She came out right as I... came out. I just remember all my "gay friends" being obsessed with her, and her music being played constantly at the club. People would take pics of themselves covering one eye and ****.
It was crazy lol.
And yeah, people should be THANKFUL because a new generation is actually discovering older artists thanks to her.
I'm not including myself in that. I'm in my twenties and liked pop/older acts before Gaga. But she for sure reignited an interest...

Yea I have tons of respect for artists who just continued to be themselves and refused to 'gaga it up'. I think Madonna has continued to be herself too with MDNA- she could have taken a way riskier generic sort of xtina path but she didn't.

With her unique and over-the-top image, her enjoyable music (which I admit, didn't break any molds, but at the time, some elements were exciting), her involved and memorable performances, and how she approached her fans. Her now overly gay-leaning imagery and politik were understated at the time, but she was quick to embrace the gay community as she rose the ranks of fame whereas most rising stars would've shied away from that sort of controversy. Correct me if I'm mistaken, but I don't think any fan base really had a name until Lady Gaga started to call all her fans little monsters at her shows and on twitter.
I remember all the interviewers would always ask her about why she called them little monsters, and she'd always appear so grateful and joyful for the love and support. It was a mutual affection and it really helped build her mythology as a star so quickly.

Yeah, pretty sure she started that trend (for the modern era)

Lots of people- the ones who started dressing weird on the VMA/grammy carpets specifically, made a mockery out of what gaga did for pop music and showed that pop music can never be saved. Bitches wearing chicken around their necks and ****. Let me stop.

It's never really acknowledged but that's definitely one of the most telling signs of her impact on pop/celebrity.

I love gaga
I had no interest in pop before her
Before gaga it was all rock n roll and heavy metal
And now it's rock n roll heavy metal and gaga

She brought my 14-year-old mind to pop music back in 2009.

Gaga definitely is the one who drew me into the mainstream area of music, even though I still prefer more alternative/indie acts. I actually got pretty obsessed with her because probably I was so surprised that mainstream acts had talent. I grew out of it when I learned on my own that pop isn't just bad besides her, so yeah!
I mean, I've sorta only been a casual fan of hers recently, but if her next album's good enough then I'll probably start following her a lot more again.

ME TOO. I used to hate mainstream music and was one of those pretentious ****s who was like "anything that isnt indie is horrid" but once I first heard Just Dance and looked up lady gaga stuff on youtube my mind completely changed.
Now mainstream is almost all that I listen too. Well, mostly.

Why am i not surprised that most Gaga fans hadn't listened to pop music before Gaga? It explains why they don't have a very good knowledge on older pop culture
but I agree with the OP, she did make music a lot more interesting when she came out. Pop was dying.

Guess that means body doubles for music videos and arm flailing like we(Brit army) have to settle for :/

I didn't care for pop music at all until Gaga came along. She even got me more interested in fashion as well, now that I think about it.
EDIT: Actually, I must correct this. Apart from Michael Jackson, I didn't care for pop music at all until Gaga came.

Youtube , Twitter , Facebook wouldnt even be half as popular if it wasnt for Gaga . She was leading the digital movement back in 2008 and still is . I think the Born This Way promotional campaign and the 0.99$ offer have potential to bring a chanhe upon the music standards.
And of course she revolutionised the pop art movement and made it interesting again . She is the only exciting artist after Britney's reign , but she has much more to contribute . She's heading for historic achievements an legendary status .
People have a lot of reasons to be thankful of Gaga . At least that's my opinion.
