I was personally disappointed with how fast it fell before it was removed, tbh.
Me too. Overall, I expected more sales, but I guess there is some effect from the fact that she has been releasing albums year after year after year. There's no anticipation and no buildup of MAJOR hype (AKA Born This Way) that can happen.
Anyway, i wasn't expecting payphone to be this huge. MLJ seemed like one of those one-off novelty hits. How's this doing overseas?
With the new generations getting accustomed to Maroon 5 through Adam's stint in The Voice, and the fact MLJ was an immense hit worldwide, it's actually natural that their follow-up performance is charting well I think.
Plus they have that pop-sounding tunes that once are promoted become hard to escape from (their poor results with HAO's singles was mostly due to lack of reception from radio, which was due to the fact after a numerous years hiatus from scenes post 2007, people simply had their name faded out when thinking about music: The Voice immediately wiped off that amnesia, and now they are newly somebody in anybody's music spectrum, wether for good or bad).
Payphone so far is doing very well overseas.
In no Country they have promoted it and in no Country the video is out yet (I hope Italy gets it in two weeks, given the song is so well received in our chart).
As soon as the song was out, it reached number one in all Latin America and Japan; in Mexico especially it still very high up on chart, and where it has slided out of top ten, it's likely to climb back in force after the incoming Summer tour promotion will kick in (next month I suppose).
In European markets it's a scattered situation: as usual the UK doesn't even have the single and like with MLJ, until UK doesn't get on it, the rest won't pick up; the same with Germany/Switzerland/Netherland/France: the single is up for grabs&buy only if you do know it's actually out, but it's hardly promoted, making it reside in low positions on the chart (that will change in June when they are making a lil promo tour following Rock in Lisboa).
Portugal and Spain are receptive enough already.
In Italy they are switching from 2 to 3 position in the iTunes chart and radio LOVES Payphone a lot (though the versionplayed is Wiz-less, and I like it less that way).
Overall, once UK comes in the map, and the song takes off through the way it's supposed to be, Payphone is a guaranteed worldwide hit.
I don't think it will match the monster performance of MLJ (a way easier song, with a good-feel vibe unescapable that PP hasn't) at all, but I can bet it's gonna be a very global good hit, making Overexposed have finally a good led-in the way HAO could never dream of.

Is Payphone even set for a UK release yet? I haven't seen anything about a release date. IMO you're putting too much pressure over it smashing in the UK resulting in the rest of europe following suit. That actually rarely happens. And anyway, Germany is the bigger market in Europe.
