I think she always did what she wanted to do, an album of love songs with hip hop beats and Americana-noir inspired strings. People clearly expected the wrong things from her. Hype is the only thing to blame.

Honestly, I was expecting Born To Die to become her radio hit.

OK firstly she was never going to be "the new Adele". Their styles are not alike.

To answer the question I think that her SNL performance has unfortunately stuck in the minds of Americans so they aren't buying her album. The rest of the world gets her though so it's not the end of the world.

This. Don't get me wrong, it would be great if the US could get on board but she's so popular worldwide it wouldn't be a disaster if they didn't. She's currently the only artist in the rest of the world (excluding the US) who is giving Adele a run for her money album sales-wise....
