Just go on and listen to what u love, it's like u'd hide that u like some soup, cuz people don't know this soup and never tried it and some of them already think it's horrible. They never probably tried it so they shouldn't judge :date:
Jay Sean has only had one hit and he's obviously of South Asian origin, not mixed race (he's Indian and looks it). He's not "obviously Asian" to Americans because most American believe Asian = East Asian.
Jay Sean is from London which is a huge melting pot of races so he doesnt stand out particularly as Asian. To most he's just an urban act and, again, he could be all kinds of mixed race. Maybe his specific origin is more obvious to an Asian person. But I agree that people generally think east Asian regards "Asian" acts. I think thats what they relate least too and think of as a very different culture and mentality.
And not only was Down a huge global hit(selling over 6 million) but he also had another big hit with Do you remember and a few lesser hits. But in the Uk he was having hits prior to blowing up in the US. And the UK is just as reluctant to embrace "Asian" acts as the US. But he has a more urban look and eastern Asians do not look urban.
It wouldn't be impossible for an asian act to have a huge breakthrough.
Most already know they can't crossover with them dancing behind cupcakes and singing cute songs.
I think 2NE1 have an upperhand because they already have an urban/pop-ish kind of image and can speak English decently.

Of course Jay Sean stands out as Asian. He just doesn't stand out as Asian to you because you think of East Asian when you hear "Asian." His origin is obvious to anyone who has functioning eyes and is educated, not just fellow Asians. And no to "people in general think of East Asians in regards to 'Asian' acts"; this is only true for North Americans and Australians. In the UK, people think of South Asians when they hear "Asian" (Brits are the ones who used the word originally) and people around the world think of everyone in Asia as "Asian."
False. Down was his only hit (mainly in North America) and Do You Remember was a flop peaking at #10 and free falling afterwards. It's obvious you checked Wikipedia for UK stats because he didn't do very well in the UK either; some of his singles peaked in the Top 10 like Ride It and Stolen, but they didn't very well overall. And if course the UK is just as a reluctant; this whole thread was about the west in general, not just the US.
As for Jay having an "urban look," how? Because he's darker and uneducated people think he's Hispanic? East Asians can be just as "urban" as him:
