This is insane. I'm not surprised though. I'm gone to the cinema two times already to get tickets and they are always sold out. I wonder what the WW gross is gonna end up being.

It'll be fun to see if TDKR can seriously challenge this. I can't see it without 3D, but it'll be fun to see TDKR try.

The Dark Knight is coming to scalp all 6 of them.

Another impressive record:

It also had the highest per-theater average ever for a nationwide release with $46,057.
|
What I find especially impressive is that we're already seeing great signs of mass appeal to the general public and not just to fanboys.
Compare it to the last Potter movie, which previously held the opening weekend record.
Potter midnight: $43.5M, #1 midnight of all time, due to fanboys rushing out
Avengers midnight: $18.7M, #8 midnight of all time
Potter Friday: $91M, #1 Friday of all time
Avengers Friday: $80.5M, #2 Friday of all time
Potter Saturday: $42.4M, huge drop from Friday
Avengers Saturday: $69.7M, great hold, #1 Saturday of all time
Avengers went from the #8 biggest midnight #s to the #1 biggest Saturday & Sunday #s. This is going to have a leggy run for a big tentpole movie.

Unbelieveable.
But wouldn't it (technically) suck if the actual weekend gross ended up being $199 million dollars?

Unbelievable but amazing!

It`s international gross already crossed 441 million.
I can see it crossing 1 billion VERY soon.

Even if it's $199 million, it still broke all those records. It would even still have the fastest to $200 million record because it's 2 days ahead of The Dark Knight and The Avengers would totally past $200 tomorrow. So I would still be satisfied
I hoping Disney underestimated just so they can look better when the actuals are out.

I wouldn't be surprised if Disney inflated the Sunday estimate. $200M has a nicer ring to it. Not to mention all the press about it being the first $200M opener.
Btw, Avengers doesn't open in Japan until August 17.
Some weekend international #s:
American Reunion: $34 million from 4,672 locations in 48 territories. International cume = $117.2 million.
Battleship: $11 million from 9,080 locations in 52 territories. International cume = $200.1 million.
Janaat 2: $6.1 million from 1,970 locations in India. International cume = $6.1 million.
The Lucky One: $5.5 million from 2,100 locations in 27 markets. International cume = $18 million.
Titanic 3D: $4.2 million from 3,054 locations in 54 markets. International cume = $276.2 million.
Dr. Seuss' The Lorax: $2.7 million from 2,606 locations in 45 territories. International cume = $92.4 million.

I knew it would break all these records because it's freaking Avengers!! People have been dreaming for a film version and there are MILLIONS of comic book/action fans out there who have been waiting for this moment! Much more appeal to the masses then a boy wizard with a lighting scar and his adventures at school!
Avatar better hope this film doesn't have legs

This didn't just break records, it destroyed them two times over.
I knew it would be huge, but not THIS huge. Do we think The Dark Knight Rises can match / exceed this?
