I love Ayu but her vocals and performance skills have been in the gutter for a while now. Kumi on the other hand continues to grow as a performer, getting better and better with time.

You do know that Avex edits Ayu's vocals for her DVDs right? They do that with most Avex artists. The link I posted was from the untouched CDL from U-Stream.

Vocals are always edited for concert DVDs, all record companies do it. It's a bit of a no-brainer, you want your artist to sound good.

But Ayu has had many great performances in the past, it's not like she can't sing, even if her voice and her way of singing are very... nonstandard.

Yes but in Ayu's case hers are more heavily edited than most. It makes a world of difference for her concerts especially after listening to them unedited tbh.

I do agree though of course. Ayu still gives some decent performances from time to time.

The problem is that her concerts (CDL) are streamed live so we know EXACLTY how they edit her concerts and that's H.E.A.V.Y.

I will never forget that Because of u performance where she sounds AWFUL... All of a sudden, her voice is PERFECT on the DVD o_o

But it's hard to judge live streams of concerts, they are always bad. I just downloaded the CDL DVD to compare it with the stream, and while the editing is obvious (some of the cracks in her voice magically disappear), I don't think it's as heavy as you guys are saying. The quality of the sound is the biggest difference, the sound mix is much better and it's in stereo.

But look at Kumi's FANTASIA for example (it was broadcasted live too)... There's a difference too but a smooth one, and the final thing is more like the live broadcast than a new edited version tbh !

I much prefer Kumi's discography and performances so I choose her. I love Ayu too though.

Obviously the Empress of J-pop. She had much better discography. She may not have the best voice but she always deliver strong emotion in her songs. Her songs mostly are pop-rock songs that don't have much Western appeal so I understand why most people on here don't like her.
