It doesn't matter if people think Gaga, Rihanna, this, that or the other is bigger than Adele at the moment, but saying that "Album sales aren't everything" is dumb when these same people bring up sales when it's convenient. Right now, they can't really do that, so that's why they bring up tour receipts, the media or whatever to help their cases. Album sales most certainly measure popularity/public-fan interest, and not a pop star right now has been able to scan half of Adele's numbers with twice the press and so-called "cultural impact." And Adele is not only doing well in album sales, her songs are all over radio and TV & she has found her place in social media.
