Top Tracks: Video Games, Born to Die, Off to the Races

Lana Del Rey created a near masterpiece. Born to Die is breathtaking, haunting, and riveting. What Del Rey brings to the table that is most worthy of distinction is the near unclassified genre. It's a melting pot of sounds with harmonizing vocals. Not only that but her lyrics are raw, and they tell elaborate stories. There are no filler tracks on the album; however, there are some that just seem lackluster in comparison to the rest. Blue Jeans and Radio are more difficult to connect and relate to in comparison to the genius Video Games or Off to the Races. Born To Die remains one of, if not, the best release of 2012.

Born To Die

The new comer, Lana Del Ray, is probably the most overly hyped girl on the internet I've seen. Her album is really boring. It pretty much just consist of lifeless ballads. Her performances fit pretty well with that discription. It is a pretty coheasive album. I do have to give her that. I also give her props for making such a non mainstream album and have it smash.

Lana Del Rey - Born To Die

SCORE: 72/100

First of all, it was my very first (second & third) time listening to that album, because I don't really use, her and her voice that turn me off so badly (I don't like it). But I listen really attentively that album and I really like it. It is a great album.
The positive about this album:
The Production were on point, great, not that original (because Kanye West, Drake, Jay Z, Bon Iver or Kid Cudi could be on some of them, and it would shock no one).
Her uniqueness: her voice, was a major turn off for me at beginning, but when you give a proper hear to it, she bring a real atmosphere to the songs and special touch, that not many singers can do.
The lyricism: It's well written, (I have still to listen and read some of them, sorry I'm French, I have to translate some of them to understand), the song have a real meaning, and some of them are bad ass.
The only thing that I wanted for that album is maybe to have an extra track, a collaboration one, just to see how her voice can mix with someone else.

Ah, Lana Del Rey. I don't think anyone anticipated, even when the heard the ever-mesmerizing Video Games in August 2011, that she was going to be THE water cooler subject of early 2012, for all the wrong reasons. She still hasn't recovered from the SNL debacle in the United States, despite achieving global success and even status as a sex symbol in the fashion industry and some international markets. It's easy to see why, her music is lush with passion and drama, with gorgeous string arrangements right out of an action film coupled with metallic hip-hop beats courtesy of Jeff Bhasker and Emile Haynee and a whole other host of producers noted for their work on albums by hip-hop superstars like Kanye West and Kid Cudi. While almost every track follows this general production blueprint, each song takes a unique take on the sound. The slow burns of tracks like Born To Die and Million Dollar Man contrast beautifully with the rushing, cinematic energy of others like Dark Paradise and bonus track Without You, as well as the drugged-up, pretty hazy of Radio and Diet Mountain Dew.

This doesn't mean the album is without flaw. Many tracks suffer the problem of repeating a chorus one too many times, or lacking a proper bridge. Radio is the worst offender, repeating the chorus verbatim as the bridge, almost leaving one to wonder if they're just saving the spot for a rapper on a remix for the radio. National Anthem, which leaked in a raucous uptempo version with a catchy, fuzzy bass riff, is boiled down into one of the blandest tracks on the album, a mere shadow of the demo that leaves your ears just begging for that riff to come back.

Final Word: It may repeat itself one too many times, but Born To Die sounds nothing like any other pop record this decade, and that can't be said for many pop albums these days.

Born to Die is easily the best album to have been released in 2012 so far. The superb writing and production on every single song to make the cut for the flawless album is just the beginning, this album has a haunting atmosphere and yet remains self aware and modest. The singles Video Games, Born to Die, Blue Jeans, Carmen and now Summertime Sadness are all in a league of their own, four of the five are boasted even more with their accompanying music videos. Other notable mentions are Radio, Dark Paradise and National Anthem, all of which are stunning.

I think I might do this review because it's finally and album that I've emerged myself into.

Summary: Born to Die was one of the, if not the first most-anticipated album of the year, so Lana had a lot to live up to with her debut. When you listen to the album, the average listener may be surprised how slow the album is, at least tempo-wise with the songs, and say that this takes away from the album. However, the slow movement truly fits a cohesive theme and the uptempo tracks were placed at the best places. Off to the Races really stands out from the early tracks as one of the few upbeat tracks on the album with Lana's eerie voice going all over the place in the best way. The middle of the album continues to flow in a very theatrical and sweet way, with her lyrics being borderline typical "my poor boyfriend" tunes. However, lyrically, things pick up with Radio, which is a pretty uplifting track that starts out very heavenly (Not even they can stop me now). Carmen, the track that follows Radio, greatly contrasts its preceding song with a very eerie track that does not focus on a boy and fits her voice perfectly. However, after this, the album kinda winds down and ends with This Is What Makes Us Girls, which is still a pretty good track, but somewhat weak for an ending of an album. Deluxe tracks summed up: Without You would fit well + possibly stronger than songs on the standard, Lolita is the definition of a deluxe track, and Lucky Ones is the perfect album closer and a beautiful and amazing song. Overall, Lana very creatively weaves her intriguing voice with sweet lyrics, but some lyrics fall short and the albums drags on by the end of the standard edition.
