To be fair, 19 sold a lot after the release of 21. It was at ~900k before 21 was released. As soon as that exploded, 19 saw a surge.
But yeah, 19 didn't have that much hype when it was released, but it was a decent seller prior to 21.

21 didn't have hype either. Adele's only had hype BECAUSE of her unprecedented success.

“I’m becoming a little more comfortable in front of the camera. I wasn’t used to it before. I was thrown into a new lifestyle and everything I do is kind of filmed or photographed. I’m a private guy. I like to keep to myself. I’m shy, maybe. It gets kind of tricky for me but, I’m beginning to find the fun in it. I don’t take myself too seriously so if I’m front of the camera, that’s what you’re going to get, me clowning around."(Bruno Mars)

Right on !! her success created the hype you sell millions of albums and the world is going to know about it.....I saw little evidence of the mass marketing machine that often preceeds some manufactured groups and singers....She didn't even do a full world tour, for obvious reasons I guess...

Truth.
People may say the Grammys were hype for Adele but 21 had been out for a year at that point, and it and 19 were both selling very strongly and consistently.
It's a shame that stans of overhyped artists try to bring down Adele because she is outselling them by some distance.

That's what I'm talking about. 19 sold the vast majority of its copies in the US and abroad off of the hype from her singles from 21 and just the hype of Adele in general.

The same could be said for Katy Perry.
Then there's Rihanna, Beyonce, Britney Spears, Nicki Minaj, Madonna, and countless other major female artists whose last efforts have been outdone by 19.

ADELE sells off talent.
I remember her on SNL. She performed Chasing Pavements and before she could finish the song I had purchased her album.
