Exactly, and even Kanye said that it was foolish to submit both for consideration.

How about we let people form their own opinions instead of relying on metacritic to tell them what's good?

If you want 'new sounds' and creating genres unto themselves and making a cohesive but extraordinarily ambitious hip hop album people should probably stop grossly overlooking
Also got a great metacritic score but with far fewer reviewers.

Last Train was great I agree but Kanye's My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy was very personal and political. And his album was much more cohesive than Last Train to Paris, what are you talking about? Listening to the whole album is like listening to one big poetry about the world.

There is a lot of fantastic experimental work going on in Hip-Hop nowadays, but there's no doubt in my mind that Kanye has been the leading force in the genre this millennium. Between The Blueprint, him re-defining the boundaries of the genre repeatedly, and exposing popular music listeners to all of it each step along the way, I don't think it's fair to discredit him.

I agree. It's definitely unfair. But MBDTF got a place on the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time. I am very much proud of that.

Last Train To Paris has a very cohesive narrative running throughout.
And nice counterargument, Muggwa.

I have no doubt that it'll be remembered, but it's slightly alarming how misplaced the intentions of the most popularly-revered music award show in the world are, or appear to me to be.

He should've released last winter, instead of the summer of last year.

This.
It was a commercial underperformance in comparison to his last era. And while it was a great album it had no impact commercial or musically(mainly because Yeezy is in a lane alone)...
Also, Watch The Throne has a lot to do with that as well. Which is a great album as well.

Definitely. He is a legend in the making and I am here rooting for him, watching him become one. A lot of my friends hate Kanye. I say listen to his albums first before judging. They wouldn't they'll say they have made their point that Kanye is ****. That is all. It is an unfair world.

occupying a genre all to himself which feels apropos because on the album he’s stretching beyond even the wide boundaries of hip hop by combining all sorts of sounds and samples and structures. And he’s excavating and exploring the depths of his soul where he’s still grieving the loss of his mother and angry at the world for its reaction to him following Taylor Swift-gate and hurt about being dissed by his live action video dancer girlfriend and struggling to figure out how to embrace being who he is as a massive icon, even if being himself means being an “a__hole.” MBDTF shows off an impressive sense of musicality and a towering sonic ambition. The album is not simply a display of personality as much of hip hop is but a true exploration of sound. These are not simply my personal kudos; MBDTF is by far the best reviewed album in many years: the critical community flipped out over it like nothing since Radiohead’s zenith.
|
This is all lovely in theory, but, like, where is this on the album? Where are these new sounds and structures? Where does he explore the depths of his soul? And having to bring up the fact that critics liked it in order to justify your argument = lol.

Basically.
It wasn't exactly "snubbed" though.

Kanye kinda let the album fall by the wayside. The buzz for that album had faded away long before the voting season. He was lucky that it won Best Rap Album because many pundits were predicting either Nicki or The Throne (which he would have still won) would take it.

You can have your own opinion and listen to whatever you want. Last Train to Paris is not a bad album. But it lacks, the cohesion, the production, the innovation, and rapping quality of MBDTF and it didn't deserve an AOTY nom.
Grammys are supposed to reflect quality. You say it's LTTP is better than MBDTF and that it deserved the nomination, but you also say that Metacritic doesn't matter at all when your opinion is clearly going against the general consensus.

Well.. Lil' Wayne is the **** with some of my friends while Kanye is left eating dust without a single song on their iPods. No shade to Wayne but Kanye, musically, is far better than him. It's all about taste? No. I say its about who is "popular".

I don't even like him, but I consider several of his albums towering achievements and engrossing experiences.

Kanye = the world desperately looking for a musical genius figure to glorify, and lowering their standards and projecting utter ******** onto the album that isn't actually there in order to do so.
He was better when he didn't buy into the idea of himself being some sort of tortured genius. The College Dropout is so joyful compared to the laboured, bloated MBDTF.

The final nominees for the big awards are decided by a blue ribbon panel. There was no vote-splitting; it was definitely a conscious decision—probably to clear the way for a 21 win. Because there can't honestly be that many people who think Loud is better than My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fatnasy.
