Besides scoring 6 #1's between 1989-1991, Paula Abdul had the best selling female album of 1989 though.
The closest to be compared with Paula success between 1989-1991 is Katy.
Ke$ha doesn't have too much hits compared to Paula and Katy.

The only reason Paula became "irrelevant" was because she took a break from the spotlight while battling anorexia.  And when she came back she still had decent success, then just stopped making albums. It's not like she kept trying and failing.
But hopefully neither of them, because they both offer different things and deserve their place in the industry.

I am pretty sure Ke$ha has sold more the katy first era. While Katy has a slight advantage in album sales, Ke$ha has more of an advantage in single sales. While about the same, I feel like Ke$ha has made much more of an impact with her first debut era then Katy has.
Katy is bigger then Ke$ha now, but obviously Ke$ha needs to prove herself with her second album!
