Because she's one of the most iconic figures of the 20th century. From fashion to music she has defined the word iconic. This is like asking what about Madonna or MJ is iconic.

The thing is, Madonna and Michael ARE iconic. Janet is NOT. Just because she was hot in their time doesn't mean she HAS to be iconic. Her most remembered moment is the Superbowl.

there has been a thread like that before where ppl have listed iconic things about Madonna, just for fun to see how many things ppl can rattle off.

As I read threads with these silly comparisons between artists, you all only further my point that most of you know nothing about yesteryear's artists other than how many albums they've sold and how many top 10s they have. Again, you're making Janet bigger than she really is. When you think of "yesteryears" female singers you think of Madonna, Mariah Carey, Whitney Houston, Celine Dion, Tina Turner, Donna Summer, Gloria Gaynor, Olivia Newton John, Shania Twain, ALL before Janet.

The thing is, here in the US Janet is seen probably the most iconic female singer of the 80's-90's after Madonna even equal to her for the most part. But the more we learn about the world and other countries we see Janet isn't that famous outside the US, her tours did not sell out overseas like Madonna, Britney, Beyonce, or even Rihanna.

The best selling UK albums really put things into perspective for me, Janet was the ONLY black singer not there.
