It's cute that they want to find the next big thing and that they use Gaga as an example of success for it. But:

Even if they said they want the next Lady GaGa in terms of individuality rather than in terms of literally being a duplicate, they need to stop searching for the next anything. It is the biggest fault with these shows.
Look for someone unique & extremely talented, which is GaGa, essentially, but don't compare it to her or anyone else. New artists are always weighed down with comparisons & unrealistic expectations. These shows mold their winners to fit nicely into the music market, which ironically works against the artist because it makes them a part of a mesh they had been trying to break through with the show all along. They also rush the albums. They basically have 3 months to record an album, or 4-5 if they're lucky.
This is a very big problem. They get someone who is amazing at what they do but want to change them so badly to fit into a certain mold. I remember last year when Drew was basically being torn down by the judges just because she would not sing more "upbeat" songs. It's true that some of her performances were weak, but it was not because she performed ballads or slowed down the song choices, it was because the performance did not come across as good by most standards.
They just need to find the strength of the artist, help them enhance it and excel it. If the artist decides willingly and at heart to "swim in rare waters", then good, but that just means that artist will have to work harder to develop and excel another side of themselves.
Then I don't stand a chance. I don't even know why I auditioned.
That's why I hate shows like this. I don't have anything but my voice, why can't that be the deciding factor, I feel I'm different enough..why should it matter? I dont want to be the new lady gaga. I dont even want to be the old gaga.
MADONNA. RIHANNA. KE$HA. MOS DEF. THE BEATLES.
Elvis Presley. Prince. Teena Marie. Sia. Kelis. The Kills. Amy Winehouse. Lil' Kim. Luther Vandross. Celine Dion. Maxwell.
Britneys voice is very versatile.
She can reach very high and low notes.
Obviosuly shes not more talanted than Whitney was, but she does have an amazing voice, believe it or not. Her voice is more versatile than Gagas.
