I mean, just look at some of the artists people stan for. I think she can sing but has boring music. However, I don't see why she wouldn't have stans when there's worse being stanned for.

She was discovered on YouTube. There are tons of videos of her showing her personality, just her and her webcam. And yes, she has a career outside of her songs, she's on The Voice.
