janet. Sold just as much as HIstory Worldwide and doesn't HIstory's 20 million numbers also factor the double disc?, And All For You and Invincible were about neck and neck before he died.

Janet has been on Hiatus. I think this time she will come back STRONG. Things are building up for her. Nipplegate had a lot to do with her demise, and meh, her albums compared to most **** released recently wasn't that bad, she just promoted them terribly. Mostly due to record label fall outs.
Madonna is here and very much relevent. Her tours slay, her new album went number 1 everywhere, and Gimme All Your Luvin was a top 10 hit. To be 53, it's a major accomplishment.
Whitney got hooked on drugs.
Michael's personal life overshadowed his music life. His albums still sold well though. Dangerous and History sold 10's of millions worldwide. Even Invincible could of been bigger had he promoted it. He's a legend, probably one of the biggest ever and the last we will ever see to that caliber. In a way, his early death solidified his image. I couldn't even imagine an "old Michael"

30 years happened. That's the real lipton. Things changed but all 5 of them set the bar really high.
whitney- one of the greatest singers of all time.
michael- one of the greatest dancers of all time.
prince- one of the greatest musicians of all time.
madonna and janet- both two of the greatest pop stars and entertainers of all time.
All of them molded pop in very different ways. They gave us quality pop music and all are legends.

prince is an independent artist and usually just is low-key in his promotion. top 40 radio blacklisted him a long time ago because he doesnt have a major record label distributing his songs. he does it himself. what was his public pop peak? purple rain and winning that academy award.
he isn't a part of the public pop culture consciousness because he is very lowkey and likes it that way. he is pretty much to himself and believes record labels are leeches. he is an astute businessman and has a very impressive catalog of musical gems that he crafts himself. don't underrate him- he is a force to be reckoned with, and has the advantage of being a one-man show while everyone else has stellar teams.
madonna is the most impressive out of all the artists, because back in 84', all of the critics dubbed her a joke and that she would be gone by the end of the decade. the critics called her minnie mouse and said that cyndi lauper would outlast her in the industry. lol- see how that went. she is the queen of reinvention and she makes great music and is still sellin out arenas.
whitney is one of the saddest cautionary tales ever. she was reallly really on her way when she started falling. in the early 90s, she was on top of the world. she even was surpassing madonna and janet in the early 90s. she had the most successful movie career out of the female pop stars. i will always love you was monumental worldwide, and the bish made the star spangled banner a billboard pop hit. she sold 44 million albums from a soundtrack-!!
her bad marriage, spiral toward drug abuse, and the death of her father (who was very instrumental in whitney's career and PR image) destroyed her.

Neither of those albums were as big as Purple Rain, as least not here in the U.S. Prince was on top of the world at time. Hit movie, hit album, hit singles, endorsements...

Of course. The US isn't the world though. Tina Has him Beat throughout most of Europe and Canada, And i'm sure he can't touch her on touring either, Seeing as shes the top Black Female touring artist ever. Cyndi is most likely the same, Don't know THAT much about her But Her classics have seem to have aged better then his.

I disagree, Prince's music has been more remembered and remained far more acclaimed.

I will give you your argument with Janet. And History stateside. Janet. probably sold more stateside, but worldwide.... I dunno. They count all double disk that way, not just MJs. Also All For You and Invincible may have been neck and neck in the states but that's it. Also Janet./rhythm Nation was Janet's peak so that's not saying much.

While it's true that Cyndi was basically a one album wonder, you have to account for how huge that era was for her. It was the biggest female debut era of all time at that point and has been surpassed by very few female debuts to date, and it produced two undeniable classic pop songs. "Time After Time" as one of the most covered songs in history, if not the most covered, and "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun" has lasted so long as to be widely known by even the current generation despite never even reaching #1. I do not think she had as much impact or legacy as the five artists proposed in the original post, but she is in the top 10 for the 80's.
BRITNEY / LADY GAGA / MADONNA
KERLI / AVICII / ZEDD / MADEON

I always hear conflicting reports about Janet. and Invincible. I hear anywhere between 15-20 million for both. I know Rhythmn Nation sold more in the states and the US is Janets biggest market(she sells in other places, but the states is her bread and butter). By the mid 90s outside the states was MJs biggest market. So who really knows?? I do know that AFY and Invincible are not neck and neck worldwide though. States more than likely?? but not outside. Janet has never been a big seller outside of the states. Its so hard to judge sales when most numbers are inflated.

By the time the decade came to an end, these five were the kings and queens of the music world.
Did you know that between 1980 and 1989 these five amassed a total of 27 number one hits and 56 top five hits?! Their 80s albums have sold a combined total of 273 million (thanks largely in part to Michael and Madonna).
Two of them are dead, one of them's riding off nostalgia (and been doing it for ten years), one is God knows where and one doesn't realize that she isn't 25 anymore. WHAT HAPPENED?
|
The same thing that befell the 90s stars, and the turn of the century stars now. Pop music is a young man's game; you age out of it.

But Mediatraffic seems to think they were neck and neck though...And AFY had the more succesful Singles that era (Afy was a big WW hit for her while his single flopped for his standards). And remember This is BEFORE he died. We Know his Sales went up by like 30 Million after he died. And Your Statement about Janet never being a big seller outside the states only applies to Today..Because at her Peak (the 90's) She WAS a big international seller. The Janet. the Design Of a Decade and The velvet Rope albums all sold more outside of the states then In the states...And Even The All For You album did aswell
