LOL I love all these random names being thrown up.
TBH I'd advise any male artist to keep mum about being gay if they want commercial success. It will absolutely affect their chances. But if artistic expression and integrity are more important than sales then put it out there. Im not sure anybody is duty bound to declare their sexuality either way. Nobody expects straights to make an announcement. I guess it depends what you're singing about. Ricky martin and George Michael did target female audiences...though George claims he was also into women at the time.
It would have to be a gay rapper. Society doesn't seem to like gays of the intense stereotype (flampboyant etc) so to appease to a wide audience and make an impact, i think it'd have to be a really talented rapper who people could connect to on different levels.
Then the world would have a gay star on their hands
When you ***** them other girls I bet they be wondering why you always call my name
And I hope I'm not sounding too desperate, I need Love and Affection
Mainstream artists only become mainstream when major labels have faith that they can reach a large audience. Straight females and males don't have this problem because they are considered marketable. Gay artists are considered "niche" and their audience is more limited (a.k.a. not as profittable), hence not getting major label support.
There are plenty of gay artists who "shake things up" but they usually have to go the indie route.
This. If a gay artist is given the full support they need from their label and release hot tracks which are radio friendly as well, then they should make it.

Ooh sweety I think we're even FARTHER from having a gay rapper be accepted into mainstream. The hip hop community is even more homophobic.
The problem with the gay (and even straight) males right now is just that their music is nothing special or unique. Simon Curtis is the closest I think, as far as quality and marketability of music goes but I feel like Simon's choruses tend to fall flat. His production is beast though! Adam Lambert is close too, but straight people are turned off by his campiness.
I'm personally betting on Adien Lewis getting really popular in the coming years. I've been listening to his covers and his first ep. The ep is a lil rough to say the least, but his voice and production style is really radio friendly. And the boy can write a damn catchy tune (search adien lewis say my name). Dunno if he's gay or bi but he's def a cutie.

You haven't actually read the thread have you? We're talking about gay male artists out from the start of their career...
Yes, I always read the initial post of any thread so that my comment actually makes sense. With that said, I still stand by what I said. Some of them didn't need to openly advertise their sexuality, it was obvious.
I definitly think so, but in order for the gay male to get succes he can't be feminine. His music has to be gender neutral which can be interpreted both for males and females. Then after that artists paves the way, I believe then other gay males regardless of them being more feminine and maculine can be slowly accepted.

Its kinda of sad that we are saying that he can't be feminine or campy or any of that sort. Its true though which makes it even sadder.
I think a gay male pop star can make it to the mainstream, Adam Lambert had some success with WDYWFM because it was a relateable by the mainstream (even if it wasn't written by him). It just has to be from a neutral point that people can relate too. They don't always have to sell music about relationships either, there are so many subjects to write about.
Like every one said before, there isn't one making that great of music right now or has a label that wants to promote them.
They could be feminine/camp but they have to have the music. And hits. And they don't have that. The last one to have that, writing and musically was G Michael and he hadn't come out at the time.
