I was thinking that in the past decade we've had many instances of celebs going platinum (or nearly platinum) with first week sales. This can be see with Lady Gaga with Born This Way and Lil Wayne with Tha Carter 4. However, I don't think we've had an instance in music history period where an album went double platinum first week, or if we did have this happen, it must be rare. The point is that going double platinum isn't something that happens normally.

Which brings me to my question. We have some big superstars today in music culture. Lady Gaga is huge. Adele is huge (especially with her selling nearly 21 mil copies WW). And we have some superstars who continuing to expand their fan base like Rihanna, Nicki Minaj, Katy Perry and others. So do you think that's there any superstar today that can pull off double platinum in the United States first week?

The album that did it was the bestselling album of 2000 as well as the decade.



It happened once and it's never happening again.

The Jive debut from *NSYNC, "No Strings Attached," featuring the hit "Bye Bye Bye," burst out of the starting gate yesterday with an impressive show of sales strength that could culminate into the biggest first week ever in the SoundScan era, many retailers said. Jive shipped 4.2 million units, and reorders were already pouring in hours after the album went on sale yesterday (March 21.) On its first day of release, the album sold over a million copies in the United States alone.

The SoundScan record for one-week sales in the U.S. belongs to labelmates Backstreet Boys, who moved 1.13 million units of their "Millennium" set in its debut week last summer.
