Ok, so rightly or wrongly, I’m going to operate under the assumption that the remixes motivated you to stop stanning for Ri, and if I’m wrong, I apologize, and please correct me. If in fact the remixes were what did it for you, and you were down with her since GGGB, then that speaks volumes about how the incident and its aftermath have colored your opinion of Rihanna. I just find it peculiar how GGGB motivated you to enlist in the Navy, but two remixes have possibly lead you to conclude that Rihanna’s music is devoid of message or meaning.

I’ve always considered Ri’s albums to be like mood rings. Each album is a reflection of what she’s feeling. Now I’ve been lurking this site for a long time before finally joining, and I remember one of Korean Dream’s comments from way back when about how Rated R wasn’t supposed to happen, and there may be some truth to that because Ri hasn’t referenced or alluded to the incident in her music since Rated R. She was probably going to be a rougher, Katy Perry type, fluffy pop star, but this horrible incident got in the way of that, and now, for better or worse, Rihanna is a meta-Robin Givens, and no one will ever let her forget it.

On the one hand, that’s a good thing because reuniting publically with CB off wax would probably be unwise (from a career perspective) and unsafe (from a mental/physical health perspective). On the other hand, people are a little too quick to jump down Rihanna’s throat, call her hypocrite, this, that, and the other because of how she reacted after an incident that she didn’t even cause.

I was 14 at the time and Rihanna was the only Popstar i could relate too in terms of style, music & personality etc. Besides that point she looked like she was going to down a great road gaining artistic merit etc. During the Rated R Era she sounded so assure of herself as a 21 yr old adult, artist and setting an example. ( Even winning prestigious awards for it) Now she's all about being "gangsta, hard & not giving a ****". Her "Bad girl" persona was never this drastic to the point where she's cursing out fans on twitter & saying f- you to billboard etc. Not even that the way she carries herself now a days speaks volume. How can you go from saying "i acknowledge my impact on young girls on 20/20 etc" to making a song about having SEX with her abuser? Not even the fact that it's Chris on a track with her that bothers me. It's her. The way she went about it was wrong and the lyrics totally disownes what she stood for prior to it. Then she had the nerve to tweet "music heals the world" What world is Birthday Cake Remix healing? She's is a big time hypocrite for that. Theres no way you can sugarcoat it and what makes it worse is that she doesn't regret the way she went about it. Yes things would've been different if Rihanna didn't go through that but i'm sure she wouldn't be acting the way she is now.

Will Young didnt criticise her personal choices but her music, fact most of her songs are not meaningful whereas Adele tells a sincere & relatable story coz she writes her songs. simple

Well, I think society places too much pressure on recording artists to act as role models. In reality, Rihanna is no different from the everyday person. Ultimately, it's her career. She is promoting, selling records and performing to make a living just like everyone else on this planet. Just because she's in the public eye, that doesn't mean she has to censor herself. Is she the best person to look up to? Hell no. However, she never says to anyone "Hey girls of the world. Look at me. Do everything I do in my music videos and in my songs." Rihanna is just here. She isn't intending to influence anyone with a particular message. It's the individual's responsibility to choose as to what they wish to be exposed to.

He's absolutely right, Rihanna is a horrible role model for young girls. As many have pointed out, however, she never asked to be a role model and clearly doesn't want to be one, one of the many reasons I don't like her.
