Gaga and Interscope got too cocky. They should have went with initial instincts. I love Born This Way, but it doesn't hold a candle to Just Dance or Bad Romance. Sure it did well globally, but....Imagine if Gaga had picked a song of better quality. Then Gaga just started pulling singles out of no where just because and then she started directing her own music videos. Basically, whatever Gaga had her first go round...she let it go to her head. It is the opposite of stars doing very little, Gaga is doing too much. She needs to stop trying to be an artist, and just be one.

Good points. This goes in line with what I was saying. I don't know why some singers decide to direct their own music videos. It's actually insulting to professional directors.
Shakira * Britney Spears * Taylor Swift * Simon & Garfunkel * Beyoncé * Marina and The Diamonds

No, haters will check everything. And Gaga has a lot of them. It's easy to see how that happened. It's all BS in my eyes.

born this way single was doing amazing when it first came out, judas i feel ruined the chances of born this way single from selling more. judas flopped and interscope went straight to TEOG. thats what messed them up big time. it decreased sales from born this way and judas singles + hair came out a week later. from jan to may she already now has 3 singles out + hair. the singles werent spaced out. i feel that interscope needs to space out the new singles to 3-4 months apart. lets see what they do for her next album.. i have a great feeling its gonna smash so hard.

And yet it was still one of the top sellers of 2011.

If Born This Way underperformed and was the second best selling of the year, what happened with her competition (except Adele), everyone else flopped?

Underperformed means performs less than people expected. So to those people who expected it to be the biggest album of 2011, it underperformed, because it *only* finished 2nd or 3rd.
I agree though, it was a success.
In my opinion it was simple the media attention. In 2009, all I remember about Lady Gaga was "She's came and saved pop music", "She's so original", "She dressed up as Kermit the Frog, that's hilarious", "Wow. She plays the piano and writes her own lyrics, she's so talented", "She's friends with Akon, so she must be really cool", "I heard that she's a man. Do you think that's true?" and so on.
The media attention she got in 2011 was very different, and more realistic, which I think hurt her sales. She was practically being worshipped by 98% of the media when Poker Face came out, so of course the song sold well.

-The album did not live up to all the hype, and the promotion died down very quickly.
-The single choices were absolutely awful. Judas especially
-The singles were not a fun and radio friendly as The Fame. She also took herself way too seriously.
-It was too dark.
-Adele was really the last nail in the BTW coffin

Also, I don't think Marry the Night was a bad single choice. Obviously, it was looking back, but at the time it seemed like the most obvious choice. It was the song most people wanted her to released (along with Scheisse) and sold the most on the album release week.

Well.. Pretty much everything ruined this era.
Gaga overhyped her own material and the mvs were definitely lacking something special.
Her singles choices were perfect though, very radio friendly and catchy. I bet her image is the reason for the underperformance of BTW.

Releasing Judas was the worst thing she could've done, it would've worked better as a promo single. And releasing MTN as 5th single after Judas and EOG was just
Scheisse would have worked well as the third single and MTN as second. EOG should've been 4th, followed by Y&I or HML. Then idc after that..
But single choices were the main reason for me. Haven't seen worse single choices since... never.
