Adele's '21' Set for 21st Week at No. 1
by Keith Caulfield, L.A. | February 16, 2012
Adele's "21" album is going to celebrate its first year on the Billboard 200 chart in grand style. Fresh off her six Grammy Award wins on Sunday (Feb. 12) night, "21" is on course to sell between 500,000 to 600,000 copies by week's end on Sunday, Feb. 19.
Next week will mark the set's 52nd week on the list and it should easily rack up a 21st frame at No. 1. It could earn the biggest sales week for any album since Drake's "Take Care" debuted with 631,000 on the chart dated Dec. 3, 2011.
Adele's first album, "19," is also selling well, and should move into the top five on the Billboard 200 next week. The last act to have two albums in the top five at the same time was Justin Bieber on March 12, 2011 ("Never Say Never: the Remixes" was No. 2 and "My World 2.0" was No. 5).
The new Billboard 200 chart's top 10 will be revealed on the morning of Wednesday, Feb. 22.
With a 21st week at No. 1, "21" will become the longest-running No. 1 album by a woman in history. (It's currently tied with Whitney Houston's "The Bodyguard" soundtrack, with 20 weeks.) Further, "21" could become the biggest No. 1 album by any act since M.C. Hammer's "Please Hammer Don't Hurt 'Em" spent 21 weeks at No. 1 in 1990.
Here are the albums with the most weeks at No. 1 in the nearly-56 year history of the Billboard 200 chart: (Weeks at No. 1, Title, Artist, Peak Year)
54 -- "West Side Story soundtrack, 1962**
37 -- "Thriller," Michael Jackson, 1983
31 -- "Rumours," Fleetwood Mac, 1977
31 -- "South Pacific" soundtrack, 1958
31 -- "Calypso," Harry Belafonte, 1956
24-- "Purple Rain," Prince and the Revolution/Soundtrack, 1984
24 -- "Saturday Night Fever" soundtrack, 1978
21 -- "Please Hammer Don't Hurt 'Em," M.C. Hammer, 1990
20 -- "21," Adele, 2011
20 -- "The Bodyguard," Whitney Houston/Soundtrack, 1992
20 -- "Blue Hawaii," Elvis Presley/Soundtrack, 1961
** (The figure of 54 weeks at No. 1 combines the set's time atop separate stereo and mono LP charts before the Billboard 200 became a singular ranking the week of Aug. 17, 1963.)

21 ON FIRE: Look for sales of Adele's multi Grammy-winning XL/Columbia album 21 to soar past 650k this week, and continue to gain momentum, thanks to the triple play of last Sunday's awards show, her 60 Minutes interview with Anderson Cooper and Tuesday's Valentine's Day resulting in a perfect storm at retail. The album will spend its 21st week at #1, while total U.S. sales soar above 7.3 million with no end in sight. Will we have to wait five years for another one? Just call Ms. Atkins the Jeremy Lin of the record industry
They still dunno that the 5 year break was BS, lol

In what can only be called a remarkable week following her six Grammy wins, Adele is on track to sell 650k+ on next week's chart. This will mark 21's 21st week at #1 and set a new record for the most weeks on top during the SoundScan era. As of next week's chart, 21 will have sold 1.5m albums so far this year, giving it a sizable lead over any upcoming new releases for the best-selling album of 2012. Yes, we're calling it only seven weeks into the year. Here's how it looks post-Grammy/Valentine's Day:
Adele 21 (XL/Columbia) 650-680k
Now 41 (Capitol/EMI) 90-100k
2012 Grammy Nominees (Universal Republic) 90-100k
Whitney Houston Greatest Hits (RCA) 80-90k
Adele 19 (XL/Columbia) 80-90k
Van Halen (Interscope) 60-65k
Paul McCartney (Hear Music) 60-65k
Lady Antebellum (Capitol Nashville/EMI) 40-45k
Coldplay (Capitol/EMI) 35-40k
Jason Aldean (Broken Bow) 30-35k
The Fray (Epic) 28-32k
Bruno Mars (New Elektra) 28-32k
Drake (YM/CM/Universal Republic) 28-32k
The Civil Wars (sensibility) 28-32k
Kelly Clarkson (19/RCA) 28-32k
The Band Perry (Mercury Nashville) 28-32k
Kidz Bop 21 (Razor & Tie) 25-28k
Tony Bennett (Columbia) 25-28k
Mumford & Sons (Glassnote) 22-27k
Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn (Chop Shop/Atlantic) 24-27k
Rihanna (Def Jam/IDJ) 24-27k
*Please note, the front loading this week as a result of the Grammys, Valentine's Day and the death of Whitney Houston may result in a greater than usual margin of error - if that's even possible. (2/16p)
