Yes she's smart in that regard I guess, but I'd like to think that the reaction she got was not the reaction she was hoping for, regardless of the fact that she's getting all this attention. What matters now is how she chooses to balance this generic direction with her hip-hop music.

Starships is good for a "okay-I'll-try-this-once" kind of song but she better not make a song like it again. It's not the same as Super Bass, which contains witty rapping & no overproduction at any time in the song.

I'm on the same wavelength as you. I laughed at the pope red carpet appearance and thought the performance was amazing. I don't know who's manufacturing it, but the source of this blogosphere "hate" is obviosuly not reflective of reality as Starships is sprinting to the top of itunes. And I'm sure her album sales won't suffer either.

Tbh, all of this pretend outrage reminds me of the B'Day era launch when everybody was hating Beyonce for no apparant reason, only for the era to become a big success.

The most frustrating thing about Minaj is that she is a ridiculously talented rapper, and she appears to be moving away from the skill that made her a big deal in the first place.

Once again, Flo Rida completely transformed into a Pop rapper. Ever since "Sugar", all these Dr. Luke inspired tracks were being revealed. Trust me, she is not becoming a Pop artist. "Starships" is the only Pop track she has leaked to be featured on her album so far. That and the title of the album (Roman Reloaded) are indications that this
album will have a lot of Hip-Hop and not as much Pop.

It's confusing because she has portions of her songs where she uses her vocal ability yet, when she performs it's all heavy breathes. Then her "choreography" was so out of place, and looked so slipshod it was hard to see what exactly she was doing other than flail her arms. Other than the exorcism skit in the beginning, I wouldn't know what the message of that "performance" was.

The initial success of Starships isn't surprising- it is basically all of 2011's top hits incarnated and is the first major single since Super Bass. If I recall, even Roman's Revenge peaked somewhere in the top 10 after its release.
