A Brief Comparison between Apple iPad 3rd Generation (new iPad) and Apple iPad 2

Apple iPhone 5 'will have a four inch screen' - and samples are already under test before a launch this summer

Sources inside Apple's Chinese supplier Foxconn have said that a new iPhone will have a four inch - or larger - screen.

Several samples of the device are already under test, says the 'reliable' source, speaking to Apple blog 9to5Mac.

The rumour would lend credibility to the idea that Apple is plotting a summer launch for its new handset.

If the company is at the prototype stage already, launch could be very soon.

The final model has not been selected, but all of them are significantly different from the iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S.

None have the 'teardrop' shape that some Apple-watchers predicted for the new model.

'The source said various sample devices are also floating around - they vary slightly from one another - so it is impossible to tell which one will be the final,' said 9to5Mac.

The four-inch screen has been one of the most persistent rumours about Apple's upcoming smartphone - and would make sense, as it would take Apple's flagship device into line with rivals such as Samsung's Galaxy S2.

The relatively modest update last year from iPhone 4 to iPhone 4S means that most Apple-watchers agree that a new model is inevitable - and many point to this summer for a likely launch date.

Sources inside Apple accessory companies also say that iPad 3 will not be an overhaul of the product, with cases and other accessories at the same size as ones for iPad 2. That would leave the stage clear for a 'big' overhaul of iPhone this summer.

At an earnings call this week, chief executive Tim Cook, who replaced Apple founder Steve Jobs hinted at future gadgets, which are rumoured to include a March release of the iPad 3 and a possible iPhone update.

He said: 'Apple's momentum is incredibly strong, and we have some amazing new products in the pipeline.'

And the group reported record quarterly revenues of $46.33billion (£29.7 billion), up from $26.74billion (£17.1 billion) a year earlier.

The stellar results sent the shares 6 per cent or $27 higher to almost $448 today.

The company has avoided any damage from a clampdown in consumer spending and a surge in competition from smartphone manufacturers and new tablet computers, such as the November launch of Amazon's Kindle Fire.

I'm surprised at how successful the 4S was, but I don't get why people decided to upgrade to the 4S, if they waited just a couple of months, they would get the iPhone 5 But iPad 3 is suppose to have retina display, so my body is ready

I was pissed they didn't update the iPod Touch last season, because I waited a good year or so (I really wanted a better camera) for an update that never came, so I recently bought the iPod Touch and they better not update it (even though it's been out since September 2010).

While we anticipate for the new iPhone 5, here's some news from 2-3 days ago:

Earlier this week, Apple reported its best quarterly earnings ever, taking in more than $46 billion over three months. 53% of that revenue was from the sale of 37 million iPhones, at an average selling price of nearly $660. This ASP is particularly impressive, considering this is the first quarter that Apple has sold a "free" iPhone in the U.S. -- the iPhone 3GS is available for free to new two-year contract signers on AT&T.



Apple's iPhone ASP has remained fairly consistent, hovering between $622 and $660 for most of the phone's lifespan. With Apple offering their cheapest iPhones yet this quarter, some analysts wondered if that would have a negative effect on the iPhone's ASP. It seems that demand for the 64GB iPhone 4S -- the most expensive iPhone yet at $849 -- has easily offset the cheaper iPhone 3GS and 4 models.



All Things D reports estimates from Consumer Intelligence Research Partners that claim 89% of iPhone purchases in the U.S. were for the iPhone 4S, with only 4% of buyers choosing the iPhone 3GS. More relevant for the discussion above, CIRP estimates that higher-end 4S models sold particularly well, with 21% of 4S purchasers opting for the 64GB model and 34% picking up the 32GB.

Honestly I'm going to buy the iPad 2 when the price drops. I'm probably gonna get a 16GB or the lowest they offer, just because I don't play games/download Apps, I won't be putting music in there (that's why I have my iPad), I'll just be using it for school, hanging in my bed, take pictures, etc.

There is a pretty good possibility they are gonna update the iPod Touch this time around.

But the only reason I got a 4S was because my 3G was old and it broke.

I'm gonna take good care of my 4S, so I can hopefully sell it to someone and get the 5. But that will depend on how badly I need the 5.
