Singles may have been more expensive, but that doesn't make it harder to go #1 then, because all his competition was in the same boat. He actually had an easier time doing it, because the Hot 100 only consisted of sales, not AirPlay, then.
It's much harder to reach a high equilibrium of sales and AirPlay, than it is to just get te highest sales. Plus, Michael came off the biggest era ever. Nothing Katy, or anyone else could do to get the amount of attention he had then. Even if Gaga, Katy, Rihanna, and Adele all got on stage and murdered the president, that still wouldn't get the attention Michael had.
I'm not saying Katy is near MJs success. In fact, no one is saying that. She's obviously FAR from MJ's success, but comparing Bad and TD, strictly speaking about the #1s, it's still a legit comparison, because they both did something that no other album ever did. To sit on your high horse and say "Katy isn't worthy to be mentioned in the same article" is just rediculous. What do you want Billboard and Yahoo to do? Censor out MJs name in the article? Completely ignore the fact that it happened? Come on... Like Billboard said it doesnt diminish what MJ did to music industry in any way, shape, or form. Like when Glee broke Elton Johns record. Records from legends are broken all the time. No need to have fuss about it.
Plus, I've talked to actual MJ stans on here and they have said they don't give rat's ass about the record, because MJ has numerous records and receipts. And his title of King Of Pop remains unchallenged.

Because Perry didn't break Jackson's record. They have a chart record in common - Most number-one hits from an album. That's why his stans don't care.
I got your point, I respect it (however it's somehow awkward comparing Jackson to a pop girl who has no impact in music industry) but my opinion remains. Chart records aside, only 4 women can be compared to Michael Jackson. And those will be Whitney Houston, Mariah Carey, Madonna and Céline Dion.
