Why are singles 2-3 months before the album? IMO, the first single should be released only a month before the album comes out. That way, when the single is actually blowing up & gaining popularity, the album can benefit from that more.
For example, back when WFL was making huge digital gains around a month after it debuted. Imagine if the album had been released at that time in the US. It would've most likely had a positive effect.
I also think only ONE single should be released ONE month before the album.
Thoughts?

The earlier you release a song, the more promo you can do for it.
Rihanna is the exception, not the rule when it comes to album sales unfortunately.

Personally, I would be less likely to buy an album from someone who I don't already like, with only 1 single. I'd say 2 maybe even 3 songs before the album out gives you a good idea what it's going to be like

I think an album would benefit more if a strong second single was released while the album was already out.

They probably do 2-3 months, because then if the first single flops, or underperforms, they either have a chance to do more promo for that single, or release a second one.
If the first single is successful, then yes, it would be best to release the album while it is blowing up, but the label cannot predict that so that's probably why they do it 2-3 months before.

Her OOTB debut numbers were good for someone who was unknown until then.

Hmm.... how about this?
What would the first week numbers of...
...Femme Fatale had been like had it been released on February 14th, 2011?
...4 had been like had it been released on May 23rd, 2011?
...Talk That Talk been like had it been released on October 24th, 2011?
...Teenage Dream been like had it been released on June 14th, 2010?
Give reasonable projected numbers please.

I'll also move Born This Way's release up a month
Femme Fatale: 225,000. Without TTWE, it would've sold less. HIAM didn't last long
4: 300,000. Around the same. I don't see why there would've been an increase or decrease.
Talk That Talk: 170,000. WFL hadn't picked up all of its steam yet, so it would've been even less.
Teenage Dream: 165,000. It wouldn't have had the second single on its side, and California Gurls isn't strong enough to carry album sales.
Born This Way: 450,000. Gaga would have had NO TIME to promote the album due to her tour, and it would be purely based on hype from the previous albums and the excellent performance of the single.
Longer gaps=More time to promote. That's always a good thing

For big names, I think it's more beneficial to release albums while they ride on the success of first single.
For those breaking through and not-so-relevant, it is worth taking a lot of time before album release.

Yet, it still only went to #9. If they waited just another month it could have went #1 like Animal.

Much less! It would be hard for her to do the promo she did in that short of a time frame.

I think these are reasonable except BTW.
I know a smaller gap would mean less first week sales, but I think it could help longevity of albums.

My BTW predictions felt a bit high tbh.
How ubiquitous was Gaga in the months of April and May? She wouldn't have had that if the release was in March.
I agree that it would increase longevity, but what's the point? I'd rather have longevity off of 1.1Mill than 400K
