I think finding cures for cancer and AIDS is good. It could save young and valuable lives. The main issue is that billions of dollars/euros are spent trying to keep 80+ year olds alive for a few more years. Or keeping them in nursing homes as they slowly succumb to dementia. The main solution to control overpopulation is to provide easy voluntary euthanasia to old people who don't wish to remain living, even if they are not immediately dying of something.

I think a lot of people are reacting to this emotionally and not logically. Whether we want to admit it or not, natural disasters and diseases are key to controlling population size.
We, unlike animals, are not hunted by humans and by other animals, so our population has to be controlled by other measures.
