I think I have came to the conclusion that Janet herself isnt local, everyone knows who she is. Janet is one of the greatest popstars ever. However, her songs kind of are local especially in comparison to other popstars' songs. Janet is like the opposite of Rihanna. Janet is ''singles-local'' but ''album, tour, & longevity'' global.
She is past her prime but still has tour numbers and acclaim that some of the popstars of today can only dream of. Thats impressive and even though she is kind of local, I still like her. I wish MTV and Top 40 would stop the ban on her. Her last two albums had alot of potential for smash hits. Daybreak would have slayed on the popcharts.
That song .

Most of them spent like three weeks in the top 10, left the top 40 without topping the 2 million mark in points, and failed to make the year-end charts.
Mariah Carey:
Janet Jackson:
Compared to Britney Spears, for example:
Or hell, even Beyoncé:
Only the bolded singles topped the 2 million mark in points and/or made the year-end charts.
I don't know it wasn't my times when she was on but I think yes in some way. Not a 100% because people knows her as the sister of Michael Jackson and I think she was big on her times. but yeah I think she's more local than global.
Some of you be writing about stuff that you don't even know about. Never did I think I would live in a time where people said JANET-****ING-JACKSON wasn't a global superstar.

These kids talk out their ass and their music history only goes back about 5 years it's not their fault.

So when you're thinking of asking Miss Jackson, 'What have you done for me lately?' remember that Britney, Ciara, and Beyoncé live in the house that Janet built.

receipts have already been posted that she has plenty of WW hits
I came accross this thread randomly but I'm glad I did it. It's funny. I see some people saying they don't know many songs from artist A or B and automatically that artist is cataloged as local. That's ignorance and it's not cute.
Of course Janet's main market was the USA. It is her home country, so it's perfectly normal. But to think she is local - like a nobody outside of her native country is reaching. It's living in denial. She did very well in Japan (2nd biggest market) and she is well-known in Asia as far as I know. Europe doesn't represent the entire world. Pop fans are obsessed with Europe. Everyone who is not a best-seller in Europe is considered "local". To me, North America is more important. And Asia is also more credible in my eyes, because it's a challenge for any Western act. And Janet did it there.
While I was searching for my fave's receipts in South Africa, I found out that Janet's achievements are huge over there as well.

She's either local or is forgettable and faded extremely quickly worldwide. Assuming I don't remember much about my first 5 years of life, in the 15 years since the only Janet songs I've heard are 'Scream' (which until recently I assumed was Michael recording a song with his non-musical sister for fun) and that one where she dances in Africa singing about every smile she sees or something.
I wont deny she is a worldwide celebrity, but musician? The only time I've ~ever~ heard her referred to as a superstar musician on here - never on TV, radio or in real life (I also never hear her played on TV/Radio unlike other 80s/90s superstars, but I may just have always missed her.)

Your country does not represent the whole world sweetie, did you not read miguels post? Besides Janet has had plenty of hits in the UK, whether your local radio plays them is irrelevant.
