Just a couple of hours after missing out on a medal in the 10m synchronised diving, British hope Tom Daley was receiving abuse on Twitter, including references to his late father.

18-year-old Daley, in partnership with Pete Waterfield, finished fourth in the event, having led at the halfway stage. A misjudged dive cost them their lead, and the duo could not recover.

But despite the near-miss, a defiant Daley made an example of a Twitter user who launched a sickening rant.
"After giving it my all you get idiots sending me this," Daley tweeted before linking to the message, from a user named Riley Junior.

once it got out of hand he started GROVELLING for an apology but by then it was too late. sky news was already reporting the tweets live on tv worldwide putting the **** to shame in front of millions of olympics fans. that didn't even stop him, cos he did the worst thing possible after all this..... he kept going:

**updated: police confirm they are investigating the abuse**

Police have confirmed that they are looking into a series of Twitter messages sent to Tom Daley.

The Olympic sportsman was subjected to abuse on the microblogging site earlier today (July 30), following his fourth place finish in the synchronised diving.

The 18-year-old retweeted a message from a particular user, who referred to Daley's late father by commenting: "You let your dad down i hope you know that."

The individual initially apologised and claimed that he didn't know about Daley's father's death, but soon continued to post abusive messages.

He called Daley an "over-hyped pr*ck", a "little p***y" and "an absolute waste of space", adding: "i'm going to find you and i'm going to drown you in the pool you cocky tw*t your a nobody people like you make me sick"

Dorset Police have now announced that they are investigating the incident, declaring on Twitter: "Regarding tweets to @TomDaley1994 - We are aware of the issue and we are actively looking into it."

Daley has since told his followers: "Thank you everyone for all your support before, during and after the synchro, the atmosphere was incredible! Now focussing on the individual"

Police have confirmed that they have arrested a 17-year-old man as they continue to investigate a series of Twitter messages sent to Tom Daley.

Dorset Police said in a tweet early on Tuesday morning (July 31): "Regarding tweets to @TomDaley1994 - 17-year-old man arrested this morning at a guest house in the Weymouth area. Enquiries continue."

The force had confirmed last night that it was "aware of the issue and... actively looking into it".

I was in the UK visiting fam during the Bejing Olympics and everyone was so proud of him - being 14 years old and already competing in the worlds biggest competition. His dad seemed so proud of him to.

Sad that people take out their aggression on twitter. They serve no purpose.
