Yeah, but at the same time, past number one debuts like Britney and Kesha aren't going to be able to push 500,000+ the first week. Gaga can probably pull off a number one debut with her next lead single, but I don't see it being easy. I also have a feeling iTunes banners prevent immediate streaming availability.

Yeah, vendors are very competitive. Look at what Target is doing to Frank Ocean because of that one week of iTunes exclusivity.

That said, I think it's still possible to debut at #1, just the days of doing it on as little as 300,000 sales are over. Now, they'll probably need 450,000 at least to get a #1, and that's on a quiet week. I think Lady Gaga could possibly manage that, but I don't think Britney can. Some of their songs have good longevity though. Last year, all of Lady Gaga's singles peaked first week, but You and I was a grower, and from Britney, Till the World Ends was around for ages.

You and I also had the effect of ending US Top 40's streak of goodwill to her. It also flopped in the UK and most of the rest of the world. So I doubt she will release a song like that again.

I also doubt Lady Gaga will ever release a song as risky as You and I again, but I would consider it a success tbh. It did okay on pop, especially considering what it sounds like. I don't think it's killed her career on pop radio, since artists like Rihanna have gotten through much worse in that respect, and still had massive pop hits afterwards.

It performed above expectations, but when you look at the peaks in the rest of the world, it's fairly obvious the song wouldn't have done nearly as well in the US if she didn't have VMA hype behind her. Even before the ceremony, MTV had all of those promotional ads in heavy circulation on all of their channels.

I don't think she got into the top ten on overall radio with that song. And it didn't even do well on Adult Contemporary.

Artists like Rihanna don't sabotage themselves. Gaga put out a poll for her fourth single and she chose You and I, which had the least amount of votes because she had performed it during most of her previous tour and all of her fans were basically dog tired of it. Most didn't support the song as a single and some even ditched her for it and the erm... Performance at the VMAs.

It went top ten because it was performed on the Monster Ball so much. But yeah, other than the deluxe-exclusive tracks like Black Jesus and Fashion Of His Love, it was dead last. So the fans didn't support it as a single and lost a lot of trust and respect in her.
