No, Serena is the only one who can be called the GOAT.

She and Serena were equals until Martina retired, after which Serena won the Serena Slam. She could have easily survived 2002-2007 if she had played at her usual level. I mean as a shadow of her former self she climbed all the way to #6 during the Henin era. The evidence is all there.

Serena needs to win more slams before she can be called the GOAT IMO. She only has one FO, and her record there isn't great. Steffi had 22 GS titles by the age of 29, and had she not been injured for a lengthy period towards the end of her career she would have won many more. We can only speculate on what would have happened had Seles not been stabbed. Let's not forget that Serena's greatest rival retired whilst ranked #1 at the age of 25.
|
And Serena has like 3 comebacks, if she had been healthy like Roger Federer has through his career she would have definitely won more majors than Navratalova & Everett. She'd probably be neck to neck with Graff by now.

Serena is just too good for Steffi, Martina and Chris. The only reason those hoes won a lot of slams is only because women's tennis before was not as athletic as today.

We are not just talking about singles GS's are we? Navratilova also won 31 doubles slams and 10 mixed. I don't even think Serena will match that (unless she and Venus play doubles exclusively when they retire from singles)

Well really 04-06 was filled with injuries from Serena so I don't think those years count. Martina COULD have won a few more but during 2000-2003 the Williams sisters were unstoppable. No one could have beat them, not even prime Graf

I think people aren't really excited about doubles as they are with the singles slams.

Marion Bartoli said that she's glad that she got to play Serena & beat her at Wimbledon last year because she knew that time was probably her one and only shot.

Graf, Navratilova and Evert are all ahead of Serena.
Graf won 22 slam titles including at least 4 times in all four of the slams. She was winning slams right from the end of the Nav/Evert era, through the Seles period (and btw, although I agree her slam total would be a bit lower if Seles hadn't been stabbed, we can only go on what actually happened - we can't just take those slams away from Graf, after all she could only beat what was put in front of her), and into the Hingis/Venus/Davenport era.
Evert and Navratilova might have "only" had each other as competition - but that's the same thing as saying that Federer and Nadal "only" had each other as competition for many years. If you manage to win 18 slams when competing year in, year out, against another phenomenal player who is nabbing many of the titles off you, that's a phenomenal achievement.
Serena has won an impressive 14 slams but she's always taking breaks away from tennis due to injury, personal issues and generally not being devoted to the sport full-time. Plus - let's face facts - she has not been playing in a strong era, especially in this latter part of her career when Hingis/Henin/Capriati etc. have retired, Sharapova is inconsistent and Venus/Clijsters are non-factors near the end of their career.
Adele, Avril and Lana.
3 very different queens but all rule equally.

I like you, sort of
But to say Serena is playing in a weak field is not correct. True Venus is a non factor now because of the Sjogren's Syndrom but Clijsters won 3 slams coming out of retirement and made a some semis. Sharapova is actually more consistent now than she's ever been. Victoria Azarenka just had the longest winning streak to start a season since 1997 when Hingis had a longer one. So let's not act like Serena is having a walkover right now because she definitely isn't. Henin was actually only owning when Serena was injured mostly or when she just recently returned. The only time she beat a healthy Serena was the 2003 FO and Serena won the last few times against Henin so if she was still here, it wouldn't have mattered. Same for Capriati.

I can't believe Mallory Burdette had two set points against Bartoli! Too bad she couldn't convert. That would have been so exciting.

His breakthrough was last year, so I don't think he's that much well known.. I like his serves and his groundies.. he just needs to be quicker though. And he lives in my area
