Dance pop has been mainstream for a while thanks to artists like Madonna, Kylie, Janet and even Britney and Beyoncé. Rihanna merely just followed the trend, just like she did with the electro-pop trend which is evident because when electro-pop was rising in popularity, she put out Rated R (which to me is mostly R&B, Hip-Hop and Pop) first and followed it with Loud.

I'll give her credit for helping the popularity of the genre though.

Setting a trend ≠ to one basic bitch being inspired and using it.

Well she kinda popularized "eh" in the mainstream music, she also had a hand in closing the gap with dance pop and urban music. After Rude Boy and What's My Name Island Pop has become a little more popularized. lastly she didn't start the electro pop phase of mainstream but she helped shape Euro sounding pop with Don't Stop The Music, songs like Only Girl, and even S&M

The most that any of the girls can be credited with is popularizing a certain sound or helping bring it to the forefront of mainstream radio. In the UK songs like WFL were already being produced and enjoyed by the public but there's no question that WFL was the start of the massive house breakdowns in the current top 40 songs that we hear on the radio today.

When Team Britney require a dubstep track, for instance, they simply borrow some production tricks and make one. The result is "Freakshow", built around the "wobbler" effect that's a genre standby. A dubstep forum thread on the tune hit seven pages in 24 hours, mixing outrage and delight: It still seems to matter when the mainstream borrows underground music, brings it into the wider pop vocabulary.

Giving Rihanna credit for Artists going dark is so ****ing delusional. Artists have been doing that for decades before Rihanna. Hell, Even Kanye did it in 2008 with 808's & Heartbreak.

To answer the OP, she has not set any musical trends. Everything she has done, has theoretically been done before. She did help shape the dance trend and contribute with her own songs, but only after the trend had started.

When she came out, she had Pon De Replay, which was like a standard 2004 dance track.

With A Girl Like Me, she basically followed Beyonce's footsteps and pretty much sounded like a mini Beyonce.

With Good Girl Gone Bad, she started to play off the R&B/Pop with Rap features trend. (See Deja Vu, Crazy in Love... etc)

With Rated R she was a bit more innovative, but it was standard ballads and basic pop of the time TBH.

With Loud, it was played off the dance/house trend that started in the early 2010's and late 2009.

With Talk That Talk she played off the House breakdown thread as seen by BEP with The Time (Dirty Bit) [Thanks GreasyBruce for that]

RiRi follows trends, never really sets them.
