I Will Always Love You: Most Iconic Song by a Female Singer
Quote:
|
This is all about the classics female artists have left to us during the last four decades. A countdown of the most important songs ever sung by females. But this is not just about commercial success, is also about the iconic status of the song itself, how memorable they are until today and the impact they had in pop culture.
|
1st Phase:
(Completed)
Quote:
So, this is where I need your help to choose the right song for each of these girls. Take into account that this is about the song that represents the singer the most and the best. I will start posting 3 artists per day, for you all to discuss which is the right song for each girl. However, this is not a rate, the number of mentions will not determine whether the song gets elected or not. So you all have to explain why "x" song should be chosen for each artist.
If you notice the absence of someone, please feel free to ask for her to be added. It will be considered if she deserves to be on the list (Remember this is all about pop). Discuss and pick a song that represents these three ladies the most and the best. Remember to take into account what I previously established in this thread. The song MUST be a single.
Once we are done choosing, the countdown will take place. I'll reveal how it is going to work later.

2nd Phase:
(Current phase)
Quote:
Now, this is where and when the real competition takes place. Now that we have reached a consensus about the signature song for each singer during the first phase, it's time for you all to consider and determine the status of the songs, evaluating them.
You'll have to send your evaluations via PM (to me). What do you have to do? You'll evaluate the status of them all. What I mean by status? well, as I previously stablished. You'll be judging how iconic the song itself is. How memorable it is until today. The impact it had in pop culture and how it has aged.
- 50 being the highest you could give to one song and 5 being the lowest.
However, this will not determine the final coutdown at all. It's only a phase of the whole process. So, there's no point in trolling. Be objective and judge each song separately.
That's all you need to know for now. Start sending your evaluations. You have until Saturday 28th, 2012 at 23:00 CDT to send them.
|
3rd Phase:
(Current phase)
Quote:
The time for the countdown has come. Now that your evaluations were sent and averaged. The highest possible score a song can get is 50. This score will be combined with another score. The Chart Performance Score. How does it work? Well, if a song hit the top 10 in any of the charts from the 10 biggest music markets it gets points. Here's a table to explain it better: Note. Markets (US, UK, JAP, GER, ITA, FRA, CAN, AUS, BRA, SPA)
| Chart Position | Points | | #1 | 10 | | #2 | 9 | | #3 | 8 | | #4 | 7 | | #5 | 6 | | #6 | 5 | | #7 | 4 | | #8 | 3 | | #9 | 2 | | #10 | 1 |
But, since there were no official charts for Brasil and Japan back in the day or database. They were separated from the rest of the countries. So, the method explained above in the table only aplies for eight of the ten countries. For Japan and Brasil the points will be given the next way:
| Country | Chart Positions | Points | | Brasil | #1 | 2 | | Brasil | Top 3 | 1 | | Japan | #1 | 3 | | Brasil | Top 3 | 2 | | Brasil | Top 10 | 1 |
So, the highest score a song can get is 85.
The final score will be a combination of the average score given by ATRL users and the CP score. The score given by you all will represent the 90% of the final score while the CP score will represent the 10% remaining.
All of this has already been calculated and the positions will get announced soon. Maybe today or tomorrow. Let me tell you all something. Big meltdowns are coming, be ready.

Adele - Rollin In The Deep
Her breakthrough hit all over the world. About to become the biggest selling song in digital history. No denying how massive it was.
Beyonce - Single Ladies
This will probably be one of the tougher ones out of all the ladies in this thread. Arguments can easily be made for Irreplaceable and Crazy In Love. But Single Ladies is the most recent and also has the only iconic video in recent memory to back it up. But Bey will likely have another song to rival it's success and impact within the next few years.
Florence - Dog Days are Over
Erm. I really don't know. I feel like this is the only song the general public knows by her, so... yea.
tha's all I have to do?

Rolling In the Deep - The first single that smashed, and the one most people associate her with.
Crazy In Love - Her most critically acclaimed song and the one that circulated interested around her as a solo artist
Dog Days are Over - Not her most successful song, but the one people associate with her. Probably will change after she has more work.

Rolling in the Deep - Her first smash single; the one that made her a huge star in music.
Crazy in Love - Another smash, critically acclaimed song. Solidified her as a solo superstar.
Dog Days Are Over - Again, the song that introduced her to the general public and put her in the position she's in today.

Adele - Someone Like You
When I think of a classic, I think of songs that can be released in any decade or musical climate and still have those musical elements, such as the instrumentation and the melody and still last through time. And that's a song that could have been released in any decade from 1960-to today. Same thing with Rolling In The Deep because it has this very soulful and emotional appeal that songs in that time frame often had.
Beyoncé - Crazy In Love
When I think of Beyoncé and what would be the one song that defines her as an artist, it would be Crazy. It's unique, it still sounds as fresh and funky in 2012 as it did in 2003. The song has these beautiful horns, which she's incorporated in her sound since the very beginning of her career, the conga like drums, the infectious chorus of the song. The vocal melody and performance, instantly recognizable. It's a beautiful song and she has many classics (If I Were A Boy, Irreplaceable, Single Ladies, Deja Vu, ect), but I think the definitive Beyoncé classic is definitely Crazy.
Beyoncé birthed King B who conquered the immortal Sasha Fierce.

Songs that best represent the artist..
Adele - Someone Like You
I feel like this song is classic Adele because of the concept. It's not my favorite Adele song, but I would associate it with her and everything she stands for, as would I think, the average person.
Beyonce - Single Ladies
I was actually torn between, "If I Were A Boy", "Single Ladies", and "Irreplaceable". Can't really explain why these songs represent Beyonce, but I think everything from the lyrics, to the melody, to the vocal performance just screams her.
Florence - Dog Days
I don't really listen to Florence, so I just chose her most parodied song

Adele - Rolling In The Deep :
For starters, it's the best song out of her album, not the best song of her carer since I will argue that "Chasing Pavements" for example is better but it was not nearly as big as RITD. And I think it represents the singer well, it's a heartfelt ballad about a lost love and that's just how we see her.
Beyoncé - Crazy In Love :
I hate to pick this one because in my opinion it's not the best representation of her in her catalog but it's her most acclaimed and popular song (although some might argue SL was bigger). It has that weird/not conform structure that Bey loves so much (SMN, Bug A Boo, SL, RTW, CD and EOT) so in a way it represents her musical direction easily.
Florence - Dog Days Are Over :
Frankly I only chose this because it's her most popular song. I don't know a lot about her discography to make the claim that it's her best song, represents her or her musical direction, so I'll just leave it at that.

Seems like the majority agrees.
Adele: Rolling in the Deep
Beyonce: Crazy In Love
Florence: Dog Days Are Over
These are the songs that made the majority of the public connect with the artists on a higher level. Although, for Beyonce, I would say that Single Ladies best represents her, however, I think CIL has more of a "Classic" vibe.
