Britney.
Note: I'm not saying she has had a greater career/is more talented than Madonna - that would be silly. But for being the personification of the Western female pop star, I think Brit wins.
Adele, Avril and Lana.

Janet Jackson and Madonna are directly responsible for the careers of the following:
Britney Spears
Beyonce
Ke$ha
Justin Beiber
Nicki Minaj
Christina Aguilera
Katy Perry
Rihanna
Kelly Clarkson
With the exception of Adele, it is safe to say that Janet and Madonna are the quintessential pop stars of all time. Everything being done by today's artists can be traced back to something Janet or Madonna already did.

^That is not true. They are not responsible for their careers. They are not even the biggest inspiration of most of these girls you posted.

Of today, I'd say Katy.
She just defines what a pop star is in mainstream.
Gaga to an extent, but she wants to be weird and ****.
When I think of a pop star in today's market, and what attracts the younger generation, it's definitely Katy.
Beyoncé birthed King B who conquered the immortal Sasha Fierce.

So when you're thinking of asking Miss Jackson, 'What have you done for me lately?' remember that Britney, Ciara, and Beyoncé live in the house that Janet built.

It's very much so true. They don't have to be the artist's biggest inspiration for them to take pointers. Janet and Madonna have built the careers of 99% of the current females in the pop world.

You said they were directly responsible for their careers and it's false.
Kelly Clarkson start by showing her voice and that's how she had a career, Madonna and Janet had nothing to do with it. And they have little to do with her musical direction.
Nicki Minaj started as a Lil Kim's duplicate, the fact that she is becoming pop doesn't mean Madonna or Janet have anything to do with it.
Beyoncé started her career as MJ/Tina Turner fusion, nothing on DIL or let's say TWOTW takes you back to those two women.
Rihanna was inspired by Mariah and Beyoncé and that's how she started her career.
So no, maybe these women have taken some pages of the books of the two women mentioned but J and M are not responsible of their careers, not directly, not even indirectly.

Any other answer than Madonna is wrong, sorry.
Anything you can claim the other girls did to gain the title, Madonna did probably ten years earlier anyway.

Everything that today's female acts are doing is something the world has already seen Janet and Madonna do. They have written the books on performing that female, and even some male acts, take pages from. From how to create videos, to turning your audio artistry into the visual artistry that you see on stage is all Janet and Madonna. Madonna is the image pioneer and changing her look and image with each album, Janet did the same thing. And that is something we see a lot of today - artist changing their image and sound with each product like Rihanna, Katy, Nicki, etc. Always trying to give something different. Janet is the dance pioneer, and implemented them as the centerpiece into music videos, that's something EVERY artist is doing today. And it's because of someone like Janet that if you don't dance you're not a complete package.
And oddly enough, every artist you mentioned have cited Janet and/or Madonna for giving them an avenue to creating and branding themselves. Hell, Kelly even covered Janet's "If".

Oh please
Rihanna is VERY influenced by Madonna, she admitted it herself. And that's just one example. Try again

Okay. 1.) Obviously massive artists that came decades ago are going to influence a lot of younger people because they're a reference point. Much like how in 5-10 years from now we'll be hearing of artists that come out and are saying Kelly, Gaga, Rihanna , etc. were their inspirations. Already Demi Lovato lists Kelly as one of her big musical inspirations.
2.) I don't really understand the tons of votes for Madonna in this right now. If this poll were years ago, I'd agree. But right now she is not the quintessential female pop star anymore. She can no longer "make a hit single without trying". Both of her recent singles and album (MDNA) flopped miserably.. with some serious promotion. Super Bowl, anyone? She's still a touring force because she's an icon, but that's about it. This isn't shade, I have tons of respect for Madonna. She's just simply not "IT" anymore. She had an incredible run

The poll isn't about recent albums/singles, though, it all-encompasing. The other girls are never touching her legacy.

You do realise that just because someone did something first, doesn't mean they did it best?
This seems to be a fact that many people on this forum fail to realise.

My previous comment also applies to you.
By your definition, just because someone did something first, means they will always be the greatest. You allow no possibility of someone doing what the original artist did, but even better.
PS. I'm not even arguing Britney > Madonna, I'm just arguing that the whole "person X came first and influenced the rest, therefore they're set in stone as the greatest of all-time" is a false argument.

So disrespectful to vote for people who haven't even been around more than 10 years. Its either Madonna or Janet. Kelly Clarkson had controversy and catchy pop songs? Since when?

And you do realize that if future generations borrow from who did it first, that's an indication of who did it best right?
