I think this started with Gaga accepting an award for BTW and bringing up Whitney instead of Madonna as the inspiration behind it. That's following a small era where she was clearly in a heavy "copying" Madonna phase (videos, some verses in songs). True or not, that made everybody with eyes and ears do a double take. That includes me and at that time I wasn't posting at music message boards and knew nothing of any fued or tension. Then there was her now former manager type lady saying that she built Gaga in Madonna's image in a way that was totally lacking respect. She said it as if to try to incite conflict.

Then Madonna said reductive about BTW (not Gaga) and a lot of Gaga fans went OTT. A good amount of Gaga fans are sort of cyber-bullies and sometimes OTT fans can give you a distaste for the artist.

It's because realistically even though I'm a Katy Stan, Gaga and Madonna are much more alike than Katy and Madonna. Katy gets away with saying it because her music is influenced by bands like ABBA, Ace of Base, The Cardigans, and Madonna, but still she has her own sound. Gaga's drifted more towards sounding like Madge and they did a lot of similar things in their career, so naturally people assume copycat right away.

True, but it is a bit hypocritical for the public to praise Katy for acknowledging her influence from Madonna when they kept attacking Gaga for doing the same thing.
