I don't know if I would say this is the MOST unexpected thing but Kelly tbh. I remember everyone talking about American Idol way back in 2002 and I kept hearing the name "Kelly" and I was like "I wouldn't know that chick if I ran her over.." then I watched her win and was like "Oh, she's cute and has a really good voice" but I didn't think she'd go anywhere. I kind of thought that would be the last time we heard of her. Then Thankful came out and a few of my friends were playing it and I liked a few of the songs. But then I heard "Breakaway" on the radio and I thought hey I like this, who sings it? It was Kelly. Then SUBG came and it was completely different. Again, I was like who the **** is this? And after the song, the DJ said "That's the new hot track from Kelly Clarkson" and I was like KELLY?? I thought she was crazy for going in that direction. Then I bought the album. BTHE slayed my ****ing life and I was sold forever.
NEVER did I imagine she'd be slaying me a DECADE later and still collecting #1's

I would say "Hey, Soul Sister" has to be one of the biggest WTF hits of the past 10 years. The fact that "Pumped Up Kicks" went top 5 on the Hot 100 is pretty shocking as well. Ellie's surge toward the top of the summit is pretty spectacular.
ANTICIPATED UPCOMING RELEASES | ok west
Disclosure, Settle (4.6.2013)
Boards Of Canada, Tomorrow's Harvest (11.6.2013)
J. Cole, Born Sinner (18.6.2013)

AlunaGeorge, Body Music (1.7.2013)

They're both great songs though (IMHO).
Or do you just mean that the Hot 100 is/should always be dominated by pure pop smashes?
Adele, Avril and Lana.
3 very different queens but all rule equally.

The latter. I mean, when's the last time a song with a ukelele as the main instrument was a major player on the charts?
But it is refreshing to have a lot of different artists have success on the chart than just the same few, following the same formula.
