Now simple rock formations are being called iconic now
Stuff like that is considered iconic. It's an easily recognizable image that represents something, and in this case, the Statue of Liberty represents freedom. It is easily more recognizable than all of these pop stars.
DEAD @ anyone saying it's not known everywhere. No1curr about its real meaning and history, but it's a symbol of New York and the US as the Eiffel Tower is a symbol of Paris and France, etc. etc.

So you're telling me that in other countries, they don't have history books or teach anything that isn't based in its country? What is wrong with the education system around the world?

It's been a symbol of one of this world's greatest nations for 126 years, seen by people across world and yet it's local. At least some realized it came from France. Not many can say that.
